[UPDATE Friday] Hwy 101 Closed North of Leggett

road closedA slide closed Hwy 101 roughly north of Leggett about 6:39 p.m.  The entire roadway is blocked. The contractor and Caltrans are responding to the scene but they estimate it will be 7:30 p.m. before they get to the scene.

UPDATE 7:02 p.m.: We’re getting information that 101 will be closed possibly until Monday. Traffic is being rerouted through Hwy 271, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesperson.

UPDATE 8:23 p.m.: Caltrans reports,

U.S. Highway 101 is closed approximately 6 miles north of Leggett in Mendocino County.

A slide has covered both lanes; there is currently no estimated time to reopening and there are no alternate routes available….

Due to continued rockfall, and for worker safety, the closure will remain in place through the night. Crews will evaluate the slide at daylight and we should have a better estimate for reopening at that time.

UPDATE 9 p.m.: Images from the Bridges slide area from earlier this afternoon. (Note: We are getting information that it is either the area just south of Standish Hickey or it is Bridges Creek–They are within about three miles of each other. As of now, we aren’t sure which and have not been able to reach Caltrans for confirmation.)

UPDATE 9:15 p.m.: A local rancher sent the following photos of Bell Springs Road which some locals use as an alternative. She asked that people not use it. She wrote, “[Bell Springs Road] is not viable now…[P]eople will get stuck…[T]here are slip outs everywhere…[T]he roads are a mess just like the rest of the county.”

UPDATE 9:44 p.m.: Caltrans Quickmap says that Hwy 101 is closed from Hwy 1 north to Hwy 271.

Kind of thought, as I drove through, that the finally open section wouldn’t last long…

How does Hi 271 solve this problem? There is no alternate road where the slide is if in fact it is where the temporary traffic light is. So is there no way to get around this slide?

Confused as well. If CHP is saying it’s being diverted to 271, did they misreport the location? Or do they mean they’re turning people around at legget and sending them back on 271 to avoid having big rigs try to pull u-turns on the freeway?

How does that work? If it’s the stoplight by the peg house 271 and 101 are the same road

Also they need to keep big rigs off of bell springs rd or there will be no way out, that road is terrible as it is! And impassable in a truck and trailer

Kym Kemp can you try to straighten this out. Hwy 271 is not a bypass where the slide is.

The slide is not at Peg House/Standish Hickey. It is by Bridges Creek, a couple miles South of Confusion Hill area. There is no stoplight.

On CalTrans site, it’s listed as “mile marker 101” where this new slide is. The other one with the 271 spur next to is is about a mile-ish away according to them. You can see a real close approximation of the locations using the Live Map on the left side and scroll around.

This spot has not been “one lane with a stop light,” for several weeks. It has been 2 lanes the past few times I drove though there. I am confused by the reference to Hiway 271. That makes no sense.

I just spoke to a customer at our local store (leggett) who said he was not allowed through. It’s my understanding that there is no alternate route from that point. (If it is in fact near the stoplight)

This information is very wrong. The slide is not there and 271 won’t help you

If you have 4×4 and atleast half a tank of gas you can take bell springs rd it will take you about 11/2 hrs to garberville from the end of bell springs rd but drive very careful good luck,

Reply to  Guest,

It is NOT RECOMMENDED TO TAKE BELL SPRINGS. It has a lot of slide outs as the rest of the county has. They have asked people NOT to take it.

Who is “they”? It’s a public road. I don’t give a fuck about the dope growers or their gardens. I’m taking bell springs with a 4×4 and driving slow and safe. I have a family to raise.

Bell Springs is actually is pretty decent shape for a dirt road right now because it’s mostly maintained by Mendo Cty and they do a much better job than Humboldt but yeah def only for 4×4 or at least high clearance AWD. The washouts shown by the rancher are on the Humboldt side and are gnarly but passable. Please take care of our road if you drive through, drive slow and Stay On Your Side.

covelo to kettenpom to alderpoint to garberville, or bell springs but they’ll probably close it. 299 is way out of the way like 7hrs or so

Reply to  Guest,

I wouldnt risk that route either, especially at night even if yourr an experienced backwoods driver. All the back roads have issues at this point, and that route gets pretty remote, i think theres still parts with no cel service as well. Potholes, road sinks and slides are hard to see at night.

I hope the chp sits at the bottom of bell springs and stops any big rigs and folks with no 4×4. The road cant take it, and its dangerous for people who havent driven country roads.
Drive really consciously if anyone with 4×4 does take it. Id say go back south and get a hotel and try bell springs during daylight unless you know the road well.

Good advice, the road is treacherous and dangerous at night! Go get a room for the night.

299 if its open or 36 over to the 5. Both are not in good shape so plan lots extra time. Or look for flight out of crescent city.

Just arrived from Garberville to Leggett via the route up and over to Bell Springs Rd.. Got stuck in a clay bog on the side of the road…20 minutes maybe. The road is sketchy but we made it in the ole jalopy!

I got stuck on 101 heading north last night, turned around, took bell springs road. It took 2 1/2 hours to slowly make our way but make our way we did. There is no snow on the road. Remnants of snow off to the side. We did have four wheel drive and we did take our time. There are a few really rough patches but we got through. Requires patience and generous driving spirit when passing and following other drivers.
