Tom Jones Detained by Tribal Resource Officers and Later Arrested

This is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Tom Vince Jones,On Monday, March 06, 2017 at about 1045am, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies, Tribal Resource Officers and California Highway Patrol Officers were dispatched to Mill Creek Road, Hoopa for a report of a suicidal subject.

It was reported a male subject, later identified as Tom Vince Jones, age 34, was walking up and down the road holding a firearm. It was also reported Jones possibly fired a shot in an unknown direction. Prior to law enforcement arriving on scene, family members were able to take possession of the firearm.

Tribal Resource Officers arrived at the incident location first and were able to make contact with Jones. Through negotiations, Tribal Resource Officers were able to convince Jones to surrender, however Jones became agitated and a brief struggle with Officers occurred. Jones was detained by Tribal Officers until Deputies arrived on scene and took Jones into custody. Deputies were unable to prove or disprove if Jones fired a shot prior to their arrival. No officers or civilians were injured during this incident.

Jones was arrested by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and booked at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. Jones was booked on Violation of probation, resisting arrest and resisting arrest by threats or violence towards a peace officer. Jones bail was set at $50,000.

depression/mental illness is not illegal, nor is firing a weapon in a rural area.it sounds like law enforcement only re-agitated a situation which was already dealt with by family.i am not generally anti-law-enforcement though i am anti-law-enforcement-pretending-to-be-medical-personnel.Also very much against criminalizing mental illness.

So what do you propose should have been done? Let the family deal with him and having a loaded weapon. Law Enforcement stay out of it? I don’t get that rational but so be it.

They could have taken him to SV. They have the power & not booked him for crimes. Anyone following news knows how broken humboldt county mental health system is. Severe trauma has been clearly linked to many mental health disorders & substance abuse. Instead of putting out fires, systems could be addressing root causes. Humboldt county, Hupa valley, the native community, & just people in general could use some root cause addressing. Ironically we have a high number of people here with the heart & the skills for exactly that kind of work, but the systems (all of them!) do not support it other than lip service… but are then are then confused at the escalations in crime & drugs. People can be managed with the right systems in place if not cured. They are still humans with the same human needs & breaking points as everyone else. Anyone that has not broken should be grateful that life circumstances have not pushed them to learn where that is

I admit… I am totally insane…. But isnt Hoopa 100% rez? Is this a sovereign nation asking for US assistance? Or is the the perfect example of why socialism does not work?

The Hoopa Valley may be rural but this guy was in a residential area of that rural valley and I’m pretty sure there are laws against discharging firearms within a certain distance of a residence.

I am family and this never should have happen. He is a convicted felon with firearms. If Humboldt county would step up on their mental health, maybe he could have received the help he needed as a child! Plus alcohol doesn’t help! They need to make Hoopa a dry reservation.

I think that is the best solution yet. We could do it on the Yurok reservation as well

I’m sorry your family member is experiencing this. I will say some prayers for you all. I agree the resources/help, etc in humboldt & the world in general do not reach those that need it most. It’s heartbreaking

It is a sad commentary that the only outlet for alcohol purchase is from the C-Store, a business owned and operated by the Hoopa Valley Tribe. On one hand the Tribal Council exclaims that drug and alcohol abuse is one of the major problems in the Valley; on the other hand you can buy $1.89 1/2 pint rotgut whiskey marketed directly to the disenfranchised on the only store authorized to sell liquor on the Rez, owned and operated by the Tribal Council. It seems a tad immoral to me.

Very true! I have asked Council members why can’t we make it a dry rez, and they said; “Because they would go else where and get it, then DUI and wreck on the way back to Hoopa.” Now I don’t mean to be heartless, but if they are adults, they know the risk and if they want to take that risk… let them! Yes I have lost loved ones to DUI, both driving and victim, it hurts like hell!! But I have a fondness for tough love! I have a No Drinking and Drug policy at my house. You want to do either, then get down the road and I don’t give a damn about what the weather is! I will not tolerate it around my children. You are consenting adults and if that is the life choice they want to make, then I don’t feel bad for them. As for Pacman (Tom) he has had signs of mental issues his whole life, even abuse! Did the school step up and help when I said something… no! Where do we start?! Mental health or Alcohol restriction? He needed help with both, and one amplified the other!

I am so glad that Mendocino no longer sends law enforcement in situations like this. I hope Humboldt gets the memo.
Suicide needs to be responded to with help. Not handcuffs

I agree but when a suicidal person has a loaded weapon I don’t think a mental health counselor can deal with this situation all by themselves. It would be negligent and dangerous for the mental health employee and other people in the vicinity. Do you just let someone, whether suicidal or not, walk up and down the street with a loaded weapon and put other people in danger too? And I believe a family member stated above that he is a convicted felon who had a weapon and had been drinking. Not a good combination all the way around

Being mentally unstable and firing a gun near residences is not good. Drugs and guns don’t mix. If you don’t think he’s on drugs just look at him. I hope he stays in Hoopa.

Interesting that this man was arrested, When Mendo County Supervisor Tom Woodhouse went “mad” and allegedly committed domestic violence on family member(s) prompting a neighbor to call the police, then allegedly ran from the police and then allegedly struggled with police and had to be subdued with a stun gun after being “subdued”, no charges were filed, Woodhouse was simply shipped to a Psychiatric Treatment Facility for several weeks, the charges and situation was all “swept under the rug”… probably since he is good buddies with Sheriff Allman…. yet this guy who was mentally unstable and suicidal is arrested and thrown in the jail…. seems like a different set of standards depending who you know and whether you are a County Supervisor or a Native Local Resident….
