Mighty Mammals Antler Wrestling
One of the most magnificent mammals in the Emerald Counties, the Roosevelt Elk, projects power even when standing still. When two bull elk clash antlers? That’s a sight!
One of our most amazing wildlife photographers captured the above scene.
“It’s late in the rut, but some of the bull #elk are still antler wrestling,” tweeted Redwood Planet today.

5 elk in one truck!
Look, my family hunts. I eat meat. Venison roast is delicious. But what compulsion makes folks want to post photos of animals reduced to piles of meat when we’re celebrating their magnificent life?
It’s as if you were posting a photo of yourself totally busting a move on your motorcycle–a trophy moment—and you were amazing and then someone deliberately to smack you down posted a photo of you totally biting the dust. Both are real but the joy of one moment is tainted by too close of proximity to the other.
Could not have said it better Kym. No respect for the creatures that give us life.
Well Kym, you could always delete this pic under your – no violence – policy… assuming that they were shot, and didn’t fall over dead from shock at the prospect that anyone would consider hunting them in the first place.
I wish you a long happy healthy, and prosperous life,
But to think that everyone walking down the street is going to agree with you on every issue of life….well, is no more than a fantasy.
So it is here too…good day.
Really? Feeling a little sensitive today are you!
I could delete it. But I try to avoid censoring folks’ opinions as much as possible no matter how much I disagree with them. But I think we could probably agree that if someone had the opinion that your best friend should be tortured, raped and murdered and wanted to describe it in graphic detail that I should delete that. Almost everyone believes in censorship at some level. We just all have different places we draw the line.
I’m sorry we disagree on where to draw the line but this is my website that I’ve built over the last 9 and a half years. I’m going to draw the line where I think the best balance between allowing everyone to speak their opinions freely and sane conversation lies. You would do the same on your website.
You are correct saying that.
I wish you all the best friend.
I wish you the best, too.
I would venture to say that if we were to meet and have a conversation, we would find that we have more in common than not.
…I’m not trying to be contentious with you.
I was raised to talk things out so I appreciate you working with me calmly. I didn’t feel attacked. I just felt you disagreed which is okay with me.
Yu funi, I funi, evrybuddy funi…
…there is a base theme. Try to understand men, if you understand each other you will be kind to each other. Knowing a man well never leads to hate and nearly always leads to love. There are shorter means, many of them. there is writing promoting social change, writing punishing injustice, writing in celebration of heroism, but always that base theme. Try to understand each other. –Steinbeck
No class posting that here. Keep it in Hunting Mag. Hope you got stuck !!
Hope all that meat fed 100s of hungry people.
Sorry friend, there’s not enough meat in that truck to feed 100’s of people, unless your only going to give a couple of bites to each.
These are not fully grown adult Roosevelt elk!
Without siderails and/or rope/straps you would have a very hard time putting five of these creatures in the back of that truck!
Hey it’s Dan Downer! Any relation to Debbie?
Good for you. Elk is my favorite meat along with salmon. I think the power and majesty of the animal translates to the quality of the sustenance.
I don’t think that picture is even from around here, and I’m pretty sure those aren’t Roosevelt Elk.
So awesome to see these animals making a comeback. But be careful out there on the highway people could be deadly if you hit one as I almost did one night
Well said Kym with a certain élan—“…someone deliberately to smack you down posted a photo of you totally biting the dust.”
That be like pulling off some zeach to a harsh scorp. 😉
U hit the nail on the head Kym. Photo belongs in a hunting magazine. As for these being Roosevelt Elk, they are puny, I would be embarrassed to show a photo of five in a truck, if I was still hunting. These guys must have waited for the Mom to give birth then killed the babies on the spot!!! Geez!!!! “Great White Hunter’s” Shame on U!!!!
Well done Laurie, well played. 🙂
