Caltrans Reports, “U.S. Highway 101 is currently closed approximately 6 miles north of Laytonville in Mendocino County; a small slide and a fallen tree are blocking all lanes. Crews are working to open the highway as quickly as possible.”

UPDATE 11:54 a.m.: Traffic is moving. “There is a tree and a huge Boulder in the road,” reports Jennifer Chancellor. “It is actually covering both lanes and we had to drive around on the shoulder…Traffic is backed up crazy in both directions.”

UPDATE 12:24 p.m.: Two different readers are estimating wait times of 15 to 20 minutes.

UPDATE 1:35 p.m.: According to the CHP site, this will be one way traffic control until at least 3 p.m.

Kym, once again, your site is
more up to date than everyone else!!
Tiffany called from Ukiah, saying she had heard the 101 was closed. (This was just after you 12:24 update.) I checked your site, and gave her the update.
You have earned your Citizen of the Year, so many different times!
Thank You!

Kym:

Thank you for your response – very much appreciated! I’m in Roseville and have only traveled hwy 80 to 5 to 20 to 101 back to Humboldt so not familiar with 116. Could you tell me the route I would take from Roseville once I get on hwy 80?

Thanks so much!

We travelled to Sacramento today, Tuesday, getting stuck North of Laytonville for about 15 minutes as some amazing lumberjack cut off the end of a tree which fell just in front of us. We were able to skirt the tree. Travelling over 20 was no problem either with a 15 minute delay east of closed SR16 for one way issues. Hwy 5 no problem heading south. Drive safely. Get a good highway phone app.

Wow! Glad it all worked out & your travels were safe. Good to hear. We live in the Redwoods but don’t expect to be driving along & see a huge tree laying across the Highway. You were obviously on your toes. And a lumberjack superhero to boot! Kudos to him for doing the necessary.
