South Fork High School’s varsity boys basketball team was seeded 9th in the North Coast Section’s Division 6 championship tournament. They will play the #8 seed St. Elizabeth in Oakland on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Cubs have no common opponents with St. Elizabeth and head coach Todd Vandenack has been unable to get any kind of scouting report on the team.

The 2017 Division 6 bracket has 16 teams in it, including Mendocino #6, Point Arena #5, Laytonville #3, and Round Valley #10. The Cubs beat Point Arena, lost to Mendocino, split in tewo contests with Round Valley, and lost both times to Laytonville. Saint Elizabeth High School is an urban Catholic college preparatory school founded in 1921 by the Franciscan Friars.

South Fork expects to have the two injured players back for the play-off game, but will be losing two others to vacation absences, keeping the roster at seven for the game against St. Elizabeth. Coach Vandenack appreciates the help he has gotten from the two JV players who have joined the team down the stretch, Jayden Paine and Banyan Harding.

If the Cubs win, they will face the winner of the game between the #1 seed Rio Lindo and the #16 seed Patten Academy on Saturday. South Fork lost to Rio Lindo 54-40 back on December 14 in Healdsburg, where the Seventh Day Adventist school is located.

Last Wednesday the Cubs fell to Hoopa in the first round of the local Dick Niclai County Championship 86-49. With two starters out with injuries the Cubs could not keep up with Hoopa. They scored only 15 total points in the 2nd and 3rd quarter combined.

Sophomore Cooper Scott was a bright spot in the South Fork effort, scoring a season high 22 points and going 2 for 3 from behind the arc. “It was great to see everything paying off for Cooper after all his hard work,” said Vandenack. “He never stopped attacking the basket.”

Junior CJ Van Meter scored 8 points, junior Ryder Pfau scored 6, junior Scott Coffelt and freshman Banyan Harding each scored 5, freshman Jayden Paine scored 2 and junior Roberto Navarrete made a free throw. “We missed a lot of easy shots, and just became a little mentally overwhelmed,” said Vandenack.

The South Fork coach had high praise for Hoopa who are on their way to the Division 5 play-offs where they are seeded #14 and will face #3 seed Head Royce on Wednesday in Oakland.

Hoopa went on to lose to Arcata in the second round of the county tourney. Arcata won the tourney, beating St. Bernard’s 71-42.
