Though the predicted overnight rain didn’t fall, look for rain this morning through Thursday. One to two inches are expected. The National Weather Service is predicting heavy winds tonight but the hills in Southern Humboldt are breezy already.

Roads may suffer further in the coming rains. Below is what we know about specific problems at this point. As more information comes in, we’ll update in blue.

Major Highways:

(Most information below from Caltrans’ Quick Map. If you are heading to Oregon, check their similar site.)

  • HWY 1: Closed in both direction just west of Leggett. (See here for more info.)
  • Hwy 3: Open
  • Hwy 36: Open
  • Hwy 96:
    • According to Caltrans, “SR 96 is reduced to one lane with traffic control at Cade Mountain (Siskiyou CO) due to a slip-out. Motorists should expect delay. Conditions subject to change.”
    • Hwy 96 closed at mile marker 7.5. due to slide. Unknown when it will reopen.
  • Hwy 101: Open
  • Hwy 199: Closed. CHP Incident page states, “Car sized rocks falling in lanes. Roadway completely blocked.”
  • Hwy 211: Open (Check out the Fernbridge live cam)
  • Hwy 254 (Avenue of the Giants):
    • Closed from Holmes Flat to Barkdull Road.
  • Hwy 255: Open
  • Hwy 271: Open
  • HWY 299: Mostly clear. However, the large slide at Big French Creek is still blocking east/west travel. Here’s the schedule from Caltrans:

…plan is to keep the road OPEN daily, starting on Sunday, Feb 12, 2017, through Wednesday, Feb 15, as follows:

    5:30 am – 7:30 am OPEN
    4:30 pm – 6:30 pm OPEN
6:30 pm overnight to 5:30 am OPEN

Please remember: RAIN changes the plan.

Kym, I don’t want to be a nagger, but the Alderpoint road has one lane traffic just before the switchbacks, (about 1 mile from Garbervile) and again around PM 18.5 where there is a major slipout. You have reported on both of these and both still exist but they don’t seem to adhere in your list. The 1 mile one-lane has stop signs in both directions with a “Proceed when Clear” notice. The 18.5 PM (estimated) slipout does not have stop signs, just signs on either side warning of a one-lane road ahead. If you are getting your information for these listings from some official agency, let me know their contact and I’ll see if I can get them to give you the correct information.
