Homeless Man’s Body Found Just East of Eureka

Humboldt County Sheriff badgeOn Saturday, at 4.44 p.m., the body of a homeless man was located near the bridge over the Ryan Slough on Myrtle Avenue just east of Redwood Acres. “The male subject was laying in a stream of water,” said Stacy Hanson, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.

Later, the man was identified as Sam Whitney age 63 of Eureka. An autopsy to determine the cause of death is being scheduled but no foul play is suspected.

Yes there was foul play, our lack of help & compassion was the crime, for this 63yr old homeless man.

I guess it depends on your definition of “Foul Play”.
To me, this sounds like another unfortunate OD.
Or, it could just be he was 63 and outside in this recent cold snap, and it got him.
And lastly, maybe it was foul play. But foul play carried out sneakily, leaving no evidence, or leaving only obscured evidence. Hopefully these things shall be found out in time.

Recently, someone I knew was released at 6:00am from the Humboldt County Jail where he was jumped by three men and sustained injuries. It was reported to the Sheriffs. Nothing was done. Two weeks later he was found diseased. He passed from injuries sustained by the beating. The coroner declared he passed from natural causes. This is done so that no further investigation is completed and is routinely done by the coroner. Apparently the disenfranchised and minorities do not warrant further investigation when their death is suspect.

I met a 54 year old homeless woman (I approached her) who was on a bicycle. She couldn’t feel her feet, one of which was infected. She wasn’t on drugs nor alcohol and struggled to avoid those who are. She was tired, beaten down, mistrustful of others in general – for good reason. It is so very sick that we haven’t housing FIRST, especially for seniors and children.

I’m looking for my son Austin last seen after a release on December 13th from Humboldt County jail. I check everyday and have reported him missing. He has a like page on Facebook Help find Austin Brown. My sincere condolences to those who knew this man.
