OMG!!!!!
Greenhouse above, poor drainage caused this.
Yep. He’s fucked
That back yard has been there for over 20 years it had nothing to do with it .The lack of retaining walls behind the metal buildings is the reason . Blame the Humboldt County Building dept .That hill has been spewing water for years made of the same material as the bluffs
Wow what a mess bummer ,for the depo behind the buildings .

A little perspective on the 1964 Flood:
It had rained over 36” in that December. From the 18th to the 23rd (5 Days!)it rained 27 ½ inches. Those are documented facts. Now for the bullshistory part, and I believe it to be true because I saw how hard it rained. “In the last 4 hours of the heavy rain, it rained 7 inches, and in one of those last hours it rained 4 inches.”
Ernie
I remember those days Ernie, still has segregation in town. Those were the days huh bud.
I believe anything & everything Ernie says!
You’d better believe me. I got most of that info from you.
A perspective from Willow Creek during the 1964 flood. The entire east side of town came down due to saturation
in the ground. From the Forks Bar to Big Red’s Cafe. About 1-1/2 city blocks. Ernie Branscomb speaketh the truth.
Time to call billionaire Billy with his Backhoe tear some shit down build some shit back up all the way from the ground
Billy has been gone for a long time 13 years. …have some respect 😱😱😱😱😱
Bummer for a local business, local family. I hope they can recover their equipment. The land is so saturated right now, the ground is moving everywhere. Hope no earthquakes, that’d be the last straw.
Please keep us updated on how we can help the folks who own those businesses.
John’s son’s girlfriend should be setting up an account tomorrow- for John, the owner of the building. Not sure about the other business owners. If you wanted to donate to one of them specifically you could probably just stop by there and talk to them. I imagine if the building is still there tomorrow they will be trying to pull stuff out all weekend.
You kidding me it ain’t that f***ing bad and John will be fine he will get his bag dope one way or another
Someone’s been drinking hater-aid! Besides what you think of John, he provides space to many local business’s, that actually work hard for their $. The sooner John can fix this, the sooner those business’s can go back to opening their doors and work hard for their money again with good old fashioned sweat, blood & tears. Take you drink somewhere else [edit]!
This is a good example of how the dope permits will benefit the industry with oversight, standards, and regulations. Everybody get their permits. Hope Jeff Sessions isn’t monitoring this blog. Saw Sheriff Freitas SCSO had a 1 on 1 with Sessions recently. Buckle down he’s comin to the triangle soon.
You have no info on what happened. …
Mud Avalanche
Those green houses had nothing to do with it pretty sure that flat has been there for years if it’s the one I think it is. It’s funny how people jump to blame the hoop house when they probably have the same shit in the back yard!!!

What are you doing here? You are reasonable a and
logical?
Blame the Building Department??? Blame the soils engineer.
Ask any old timer about the ground in Humboldt county and they’ll tell you there are no such thing as stable hillsides ‘they’re still moving’
Yes they have .they have been there for years
They were not in place the last time we had real rain. Google earth is your friend
Thank you for that reply guest, that is my house that could potentially slide down. I appreciate it… Any negative feedback is really not necessary… thank you to all that gave me positive attitude, that means the world to me. I am so incredibly glad no one was hurt in this disaster..
I hope your home will be alright.
We love you and are there when you need us
I am so sorry about your house above….. That is my brother’s business ! This is really awful and sad!!
Wow you have no respect or clue
Must of been from the mega grow above the business.
Those greenhouses definitely caused the slide. It’s a fact, not mentioned by the media (they have their reasons), that illicit marijuana grows have caused every geological disaster in Humboldt County going back thousands of years and have a direct tie to terrorism, including the Bowling Green Massacre and the attacks in Atlanta. Jeff Sessions has been apprised of the situation and is currently opening a wing in Guantanamo explictely for Humboldt pot heads. Alternative facts.
Thank you. I needed that chuckle.
So much for those hoop dreams eh?
Uh…You forgot Y2K…But, that might have been caused by paraquat.
Wow you have a great imagination
That was great! I was starting to get sad at reading everyones nasty responses.
😱😱😱😱😄😄😄😄wow lol
I remember the 64 flood when the old briceland bridge was there ,and I remember we had to walk across it with my mom and dad and part of it was missing and the water was like a foot away from the bottom of that bridge, and if you’ve lived in Humboldt co long enough you would know what I’m talking about the old briceland bridge huh ernie .my mother was in the hospital having my sister .The only way to get to town was walk.
I had to walk that old bridge all of the approach was Gin they had put large timbers across for us to walk on. I will never forget that swirling water below not that far from our feet. My husband Roy carried our 4 month old boy across. Was so glad to get to safe ground on the other side. Very scary!
What does the building and planning department say to this I wonder?
This is why retaining walls are usually built in scenarios, you cant have a vertical dirt wall sitting there that’s 20 plus feet tall, what is going on here and who owns this land? So who is liable?
And where on earth is the counties code enforcement?? What is really going on here??
County Money grab for building permits .They approved all the buildings and the home above .The inspectors are not qualified .They also now send out most permit applications that need someone with a brain to review .They don’t tell you this but all commercial permits are now sent out .They pay and out side firm to review them and now you can see why .
Nothing, they probably all have 3 hoop greenhouses in the backyard too.
Sounds like you should go work for the County and help straighten things out. Oh wait, never mind, yer too busy saving the planet growing weed. You reap what you sow.
Is AmeriGas affected? The first report talked about a strong smell of gas. Now the power is out in Redway
Wow…welcome to the the world of presumptions!!!
I hope all is safe, looks like that whole area could move?
Just plant some weed there. That will fix all the problems.
Powers out in Garberville, too. No gas stations are open.
I can figure what business it is would like to help
Slides happen here. Both before and after the introduction of the bulldozer.
Fantasys of an idyllic past free from landslides were one of the the delusions I had to unlearn after my first El Niño winter.
I can’t figure that out
I hope the injured dude with the cut recovers soon; he looks pretty shook up.
Who is liable? Nobody, if it is proven, To be an act of nature
Some nice garden soil was lost today. There is several inches of dark humus rich top soil on top of a bench of soft sediment that is up against a cliff of Wildcat sandstone. Water is coming down a couple hundred feet above on to the bench. Draining the runoff away from there would help stabilize what is left.
The green box on the ground is a transformer for pg&e if I am not mistaken.(the one that the slide -covered).if that is the reason the power is out;does a new one have to be brought in from out of this immediate area?
Redway. Jesus. Do some more drugs.
They sure picked a bad day to quit smoking. Be sure to update with ways we can help. Being a machine shop, I doubt the customers toys will be fixed any time soon. Feels to all!
John Shwartz, the owner of the buildings has no slide insurance coverage. The building is totaled. A local account will be set up tomorrow for help with donations. Please stay tuned.
Thanks, Lynn. Glad folks are helping. Would you please let the North Coast Small Business Development Center know when it’s up so we can share the notice? [email protected]
Thanks Leila, I sent an email. For others who might happen to look here, the acct for donations is # 18840 at the Garberville Community Credit Union.
John says if anyone wants any free clean fill there is plenty behind the shop. Please call (707) 923 7648
Please meet him before you help him
