Thanks! When i first read the story I didn’t know if this was still active, or had occurred around mid-night and was out by now. I assume it is still an active fire as of 7:05am.

So much action on McCullens lately and none of it good 🙁 Seen a fair amount of talk about the neighborhood wanting to mobilize to combat crime over that way within local Facebook pages… If it isn’t crime related, it’ll be a fluke

I think this fire is an Arson. The past couple mornings I have seen EPD there because of vandalism (broken windows & such). Very sad to see…

Wow! I used to buy comic books and chewing gum there when I was growing up and we lived across the street. Of course, that was many moons ago and it was known as Pete’s Market back then. Thanks for sending this.

From the scanner recording, the fire was initially reported by a sheriff’s deputy passing by and dispatched at 5:18 a.m. with a full structure response which included automatic aid from Arcata Fire.

Upon arrival and a size-up, the Incident Commander requested a second alarm at about 5:26, which added engines from Samoa Fire and Loleta Fire.

At 5:36 it was again upgraded and Fortuna Fire was added including their ladder truck.

At 5:40 they switched from offensive to “defensive attack” which means all personnel were pulled out of the building and it was fought from the exterior only, from the ground and from aerial ladders.

What possible motivation could there be for an attack on this innocent example of life north of the wall.

The couple who are the owners of the El Pueblo Market are some of the kindest, sweetest and most generous people I have had the pleasure of meeting. I used to pay my telephone bill there every month. My heart aches for them tonight. Rely on your faith…..the Lord is with thee…..
