Lady Cubs Not Discouraged by Loss to Hoopa
This left South Fork with just 6 players available, and when one of them fouled out in the 3rd quarter, the remaining 5 played the rest of the second half with no breaks. “Our girls got beat up on Friday but they never gave up. They played with heart and intensity until that final buzzer. These girls are improving every day and putting everything they have into it”, added Wantt.
Senior Noelia Alatorre led scorers with 11 points and was 5 for 7 from the free throw line. “Noelia was hustling up and down the court diving for loose balls and going hard in the paint,” said Wantt.
Sophomore Regina Salomon had 10 points including a 3-pointer. Teammate senior Sabrina Miclette said of Salomon, “Regina is by far our strongest player out there. She’s been playing 4 quarters a game, with no breaks, and never gives up.” As point guard, Salomon’s passing ability has improved greatly in the last couple weeks as she gets more confident in her role. The team is now 0-3 in the Humboldt del Norte Little Four Conference and 5-11 overall. Says Miclette: “We’re struggling to win games this season, but I do have to say, win or loose, we’ve been staying together as a team, and that’s what matters the most in the end. It’s going to be a rough rest of the season with so few players but if we stick together and play with heart, I think we still have a couple wins in our future.”
This week the Lady Cubs will travel to Fortuna on Wednesday, tip-off at 6:00 pm. Then they will host St. Bernard’s on Friday, tip-off again at 6:00 pm. On Saturday they will travel to Point Arena for a 5:00 pm tip-off.
