Yesterday’s Standoff in Bayside Started With Attempted Welfare Check on Possible Suicidal Subject

Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at approximately 9:45 a.m. Humboldt County Deputy Sheriffs responded to the 4000 block of Hwy 101 in Bayside to a welfare check request of a possible suicidal subject armed with a handgun.  Deputies received information that a 58 year old male adult was going to kill himself if law enforcement officers came to the door of his residence.  Deputies set up a perimeter around the residence and began to evacuate nearby residents.  Mental Health and the Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiations Team responded to assist.

Crisis negotiators were soon able to make phone contact with the subject and convince him to exit the residence unarmed.  The subject was taken into custody without further incident and transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

No members of law enforcement or the public was injured during this incident.

So a guy tells someone he is going to kill himself if cops show up at his door. Naturally, the most prudent course of action is to send the police over to surround his house as quickly as possible.

No casualties and everyone went home at the end of the day to their families. Put a frigin bow on it. Mission Accomplished!

Someone like his mom could have handled it with less drama. Dude wasn’t brandishing or threatening anyone else. If he talking about it, it’s a plea for help.

So did I miss the part where there was actually a standoff? Couldn’t they have just called the subject on the phone to begin with and use a little intuition developed by all the special training they received to ascertain whether or not this guy was actually a threat to himself or others?

He wasn’t answering his phone. Caller said he was suicidal with a firearm. According to the article. So yeah LEO is going to use every precaution.
