[UPDATE 10:30 p.m. ] Weather and Road Conditions for Saturday
Rain is pounding the Emerald Counties since last night and, in the higher elevations there is quite a bit of snow. According to the National Weather Service,
Two weather systems are expected to bring significant rainfall amounts across Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity Counties. The first [arrived last night] and continues through Monday afternoon. The second system arrives early Tuesday morning and persists through Thursday.
With these systems, expect steep and rapid rises on the mainstem rivers. Standing or ponding water is also expected in low-lying areas in and in areas with poor drainage. Also urban street flooding is expected where storm drains are unable to keep up with the rainfall.
Snow has fallen through the night across the interior mountain ranges. Orleans reported two inches of snow fell and in the mountains east of Weaverville six inches reportedly fell. The National Weather Service says, “Temperatures will warm later today, but snow still falling in parts of Trinity and NE Humboldt Co. Drive safe and carry chains!”
The Weather Service also warns, “Strong wind occurring in hills of Humboldt/Del Norte Co. Watch out in exposed high elevation areas. Wind Advisory valid until 4 PM.”
Also, should you be heading east,

She says the snow plows are working from O’Brien south. It is raining and the temperature is 31 degrees at 11:45 a.m. so the roads are slick and icy.
She’ll be updating us as she continues towards Humboldt County.
UPDATE: Slushy near the Collier Tunnel but basically good.
UPDATE 12:10 p.m.: Heading across the California/Oregon state line, Totten says the temperature has moved upwards and it is now raining and not as icy. 199 is plowed.
HWY 299: The road is mostly clear of snow. However, the large slide at Big French Creek is still blocking east/west travel.

Tree down at Casper but other than that looks clear.
It’s neat to see your on top of things with the weather Kym.
Kym’s site is the most comprehensive community blog on the planet, in my experience. Humboldt County is incredibly fortunate to have her at the helm of this hub.
Bless you and thank you, Kym.
Second that!
Aww, thank you!
May I third that ? I just did ! My number 1 source for our local news.
As a courtesy, Mother Nature will be performing free structural integrity testing for all unpermitted structures over the next 48 hours.
Another year, another hovel (deep sigh).
Kym, I have to add a thank you, too. Long-time resident and now living in Etna. I am able to keep up with our family and friends in Humboldt. We use Hwy 3 to visit. Just spent Christmas in Fortuna and had to travel up via Grant’s Pass and down 101. Lots of snow and ice here. Today it is raining. Can hear the snow coming off the roof. Thanks again for keeping us informed of all the latest news.
