[UPDATE 2:35 p.m.] Weather and Roads Report for Wednesday

While most snow has melted in low-lying areas, frozen flakes continue to bury the mountainous areas of the Emerald Counties into late yesterday.

According to the National Weather Service,

Showers will continue today with some higher elevation snow showers possible, mainly for locations above 4000 feet…Very cold overnight low temperatures are expected the next couple of nights as high pressure builds over northwestern California. Overnight lows will fall into the lower 30s and 20s across much of the region with some isolated interior valleys potentially reaching the teens.

Hwy 299 at Berry Summit this morning.

Major Highways:

(Information from Caltrans)

Hwy 3: Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels.

Hwy 36: Headed east of Mad River chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels.

Hwy 96: Chains required by Happy Camp

Hwy 101: Currently mostly clear. There are no chains required.

HWY 299: Closed at Big French Creek due to a slide. As of late yesterday, Caltrans reports that at Berry Summit, “Chains, traction devices or snow tires are required on the drive axle of all vehicles except four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles.”

Humboldt County Roads:

While many major highways are clear, county roads are struggling under the wintery conditions.

After seeing these guys wade into nearly chest high water at 1:00 am on a cold winter morning to keep the highway open, I would say, not paid nearly enough!
Thank you CalTrans!

Accuweather.com has lived up to their name for me at least they have hour by hour forecats available as well as all the usual forms as well!!! They also have a plugin for Firefox Browser to integrate a weather forecast bar across the bottom or the top either one of the Browser!!! In case you wanted a second source out of curiosity or whatever!!!

Keep in mind folks that the camera showing the west side of Barry Summit can show easy conditions when the east side is not. Driving east yesterday over Barry Summit just before dark was snow/ice free until dropping over in to the east side of Barry Summit. It was completely ice covered from summit to Willow Creek. No more than 25 mph the whole way, and quite a stressful drive. Very beautiful though.

Similar to the previous comment about Berry Summit, on all these mountain highways, particularly Highway 36, you can go around a corner or over a ridge from sun and safe conditions to shadow and north face black ice. The difference can be drastic! Be aware and drive carefully.

It’s 11 am and it is snowing at hwy 3 and hwy 36 now, Post Mt. vfd has responded to half a dozen accidents,1 truck was a 100′ over the bank, done with serious injury and two calls for people stuck in the snow, 1 at 5 am this morning for 2 people stuck in the snow and out of gas and very cold. I pulled 2 trucks back on the road yesterday on my way to Hayfork..

Hoopa schwacked by snowfall, power outages: No accurate account of how many trees downed is available, but many down on Tish tang road, and Kimaw Medical Center is closed, at least today. Approximately 6 inches accumulated snow, weighed down by the rain and low temps, brought down many trees, blocking roads and knocking down power lines and telephone poles, all over the valley.
Be very careful if traveling, don’t handle power lines! Stay safe!

Amen gypsy rose. Most people don’t realize how dangerous working for caltrans can be this time of year. They don’t understand what it takes to keep some of these roads open. …
