[UPDATE 10:12 a.m.] Shots Heard; SWAT on Way to Hoopa for Possible Standoff

According Sgt. Ken Swithenbank, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is dealing with a barricaded suspect in Hoopa. “Shots have been heard in the area. SWAT is responding.”

Scanner traffic indicates that the California Highway Patrol is sending units to help block Hwy 96. “They are going to shut down 96…rerouting to Shoemaker in possibly ten minutes,” said a voice on the scanner.

UPDATE 8:03 a.m.: Scanner traffic says the suspect is out of his residence, walking towards the Hwy 96 with a handgun. One woman reported over the scanner that she heard a bullet ricochet.

UPDATE 8:05 a.m.: The suspect is walking up the driveway, reports one officer at the scene.

UPDATE 8:09 a.m.: “Suspect is pointing his weapon at the patrol vehicle,” repeats dispatch after hearing an officer say something similar. Then she repeats that that the officer and the suspect are in a physical altercation. Then she repeats a request that medical personnel respond, “Code 3. Shots fired.”

A few seconds later, she repeats an officer’s report, “We have one detained….Suspect detained.”

UPDATE 8:10 a.m.: “It does not appear the suspect was injured,” says an officer at the scene over the scanner.

Dispatch requests Mental Health continue to the scene.

“Suspect in the patrol car trying to kick out windows,” repeats the dispatcher.

UPDATE 8:13 a.m.: The dispatcher cancels the call for SWAT.

UPDATE 10:12 a.m.: Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On Thursday, October 27, 2016 at about 3:30 a.m. Humboldt County Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched to the south end of Hoopa for a report of a subject having some type of medical issue and shooting from his residence.

After several hours on scene, the subject confronted deputies resulting in an officer involved shooting. The suspect was taken into custody. Further information will be provided in future media release.

Mental health, drugs, and alcohol! Not a good mixture at all! I pray all is safe, officer and suspect!

Yes – I’m often impressed at how cool-headed police are (for the most part) here – I know of several incidents where police were shot at but managed to subdue the shooter without lethal force. Good job – must take a lot of self-control

I agree moocow. I too have often heard about police subduing suspects in similar situations were lethal force COULD have been totally justified and also probably WOULD have been the safer and easier thing to do. Hats off to the cops for that.

Glad all is ok. The police would have been justified in shooting suspect since they were being fired upon.
