[UPDATE 8:08 a.m.] Large Commercial Fire in McKinleyville
Information and images from Arcata Fire District’s Facebook page (This is believed to be the new gym and community pool next to the movie theater) :
Arcata Fire District crews, with the help of neighboring agencies, are at scene of a large commercial structure fire on Betty Court in McKinleyville. The fire has been knocked down as crews work on overhaul and salvage operations.
Please use caution while in the area. Thank you for your support.
UPDATE 8:08 a.m.: This structure was being built by the Big Lagoon Rancheria. According to the Mad River Union’s article earlier this year, it was intended to house a “a swimming pool, sauna tub, steam rooms and an array of exercise equipment.”
The 29,000-square-foot fitness center – called The Club at Mill Creek – is being built by the Big Lagoon Rancheria on Betty Court off School Road near the Mill Creek Cinema.
UPDATE 9:23 a.m.: Here is the Facebook page of The Club at Mill Creek.

Oh no!! Looks like a total loss! How sad!
Good work scooping LOCO!
Fire hydrant on Hedge Rose Ct opened as a precautionary measure against fire’s spread to adjacent homes.
I saw a homeless woman sleeping under an awning there last weekend after I got out of a movie and went over to check out the building(excited to have a pool nearby). She had multiple blankets and was huddled up by the front door out of the rain. Maybe a homeless person started a small fire to keep warm that got out of hand?
Damnit, it’s Bayfront 1 all over again. Was the hydrolic fluid on site yet? It was coming along so well! Shame.
The same person that torched Bayfront One when it was under construction, also torched a half completed condo complex near Sequoia Park as well.

Wow that is a huge two story building. Also it is next to Jehovah Kingdom Hall. Not sure if services are being held today. Just saying.
I’m so sad!! I was really looking forward to having that in our community 🙁
I hate LOCO but love KYM.
Right as HOJ hit submit, attack of the virus online offline scenario.
The rewrite.
Heard sirens.
Area: Transients frequent the woods and Cha Gah Cho site, camp, loiter over toward behind Kmart/movie theatre back woods nearest construction site culdesac.
Arsonists? ELF like 13 years ago, 2 months, 23 days after August 1 arson fire in San Diego
Codified as 2 months later = two uses of complex
23 days later = first prime number starting with digit 2
Apologies ahead of time to transients and arsonists if fire was caused by self combustion, electrical or other onsite cause.
Sad loss for the community, but at least the structure was not completely finished with people frequenting the services….still though, all the hard work up in smoke.
HOJ you always look so stunning in your tin foil hat!!!
Thank You. Tried to get all gussied up for you using those other worldly powers…..the power of prime…..
13, 23, 83……and how these primes work in pairs or digits of 2……relative to urban mythological tendencies of conspiratorial chaoses…….at least the numbers add up, yes?

There were no skid marks, “no appearance of braking,” at the scene where a tour bus slammed into an 18-wheeler that was driving about 5 mph, a California Highway Patrol chief said Monday.
The Sunday crash killed 13 people who were traveling from Red Earth Casino in Salton Sea Beach to Los Angeles, making it the deadliest in California in at least a decade, according to state Office of Traffic Safety data.

The National Transportation Safety Board has joined CHP in investigating the crash. Investigators will examine the drivers, the vehicles, lighting, weather and traffic conditions, but the agency “will not speculate about the cause” until the investigation is concluded, board member Earl Weener said Monday.
“It is so early on, we cannot say definitely what the cause of this accident is,” said Jim Abele, chief of the California Highway Patrol’s Border Division.
The tour bus had been on its way back to Los Angeles from Red Earth Casino in Salton Sea Beach, carrying 43 people. The 13 victims were all residents of Los Angeles, and among them was the driver of the bus and owner of USA Holiday, the company that operated the bus.
Utility work in the area had slowed traffic early Sunday morning, the NTSB noted, but Abele said work had continued throughout the night and no other incidents or accidents had been reported. Southern California Edison confirmed that work was still ongoing at 5:17 a.m., when the crash occurred, but said CHP and Caltrans handle traffic mitigation for its projects.
[The power of prime on the same Sunday morning: note that two uses = bus driver and owner of bus company and time of early morning similar to when fire on “The Club” supposedly began, construction activities,over a decade in time span, victim identified by 3 words – Big Lagoon Rancheria versus Red Earth Casino, etc…}
