[UPDATE: Monday] Bystander Was “a Rock Star” After Major Injury Accident

A car driven by an elderly woman barreled through the stop sign at P and Hodgson and ended up some too yards from the roadway into the green belt the Sequoia Park Trail access and came to a stop after striking a tree. According to Chris Emmons, Public Information Officer for Humboldt Bay Fire, the initial report came in for an accident with an extrication. The first units on scene saw that there was minimal extrication needed, but due to the distance from the roadway the full response was continued. The elderly woman sustained major injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance in critical condition.

Just before 3 p.m. today a car driven by an elderly Eureka woman went through a stop sign at P Street and Hodgson, up a dirt embankment, and apparently flew through the air before striking a redwood tree. The tree was about 200 feet from the roadway in the green belt near the Sequoia Park Trail access.A car driven by an elderly woman barreled through the stop sign at P and Hodgson and ended up some too yards from the roadway into the green belt the Sequoia Park Trail access and came to a stop after striking a tree. The woman received major injuries in the collision. A bystander, Erin Edmondson of Eureka immediately rushed to assist the victim.

“She was talking to her,” said Battalion Chief Kent Hulbert of Humboldt Bay Fire referring to the bystander helping the patient. “She straightened her out and opened her airway. She was a rock star.”

Edmondson spoke to us this evening. “I didn’t see the accident. I just saw everyone hit their brakes,” she said. “I ran down and found her hunched over.”

“I work for an oral surgeon,” Edmondson explained, “so I knew how to help.” With the assistance of a man who worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, she said she “cradled” the injured woman–held her spine steady and “chinned her”–lifted her chin so that the patient would be able to breathe.

“They are doing an investigation,” Hulbert explained.

Anyone can learn CPR or first responder skills – great things to know. You just might save a life someday, and how cool is that?

Good thing she didn’t kill anyone. Remember, it may fall to you to take access to a vehicle away from a loved one due to age or medical issues.

Most people would like to die peacefully in their sleep, not screaming like the rest of the people in the car.

The life you save could be their own.

You better have the community invest in better public transport options than currently exist before you hit that age or have an early stroke. Know- it- alls resist giving up driving harder than anyone.

I so totally agree with you Scott. My mother drove at the age of 88 until her final fender bender, two days after DMV reissued her license. Luckily my older sister was brave enough to take her keys. We had already reported her to the police and DMV. DMV says if the elderly can pass a written test then they are obligated to issue a license. It’s CRAZY I tell ya. There needs to be a way to measure reaction time and mental alertness. (Remind me of this when I’m 80+)

Kudos to all the help! Scott..Most people would rather die in their sleep? Not Vikings Laddy,Fully awake, eyes wide open, and looking forwards/towards the ship/ trip to Vallhalla.

Thanks all the same, but I’ll take the sleep route many years from now, if this is an enrollment window. Good luck with that boat ride to Orkin or Odin or whomever.

I doubt the Vikings wish to be taken out by a car with excessive speed. I don’t see the honor in being a speed bump!
