[UPDATE: Monday] Bystander Was “a Rock Star” After Major Injury Accident
The woman received major injuries in the collision. A bystander, Erin Edmondson of Eureka immediately rushed to assist the victim.
“She was talking to her,” said Battalion Chief Kent Hulbert of Humboldt Bay Fire referring to the bystander helping the patient. “She straightened her out and opened her airway. She was a rock star.”
Edmondson spoke to us this evening. “I didn’t see the accident. I just saw everyone hit their brakes,” she said. “I ran down and found her hunched over.”
“I work for an oral surgeon,” Edmondson explained, “so I knew how to help.” With the assistance of a man who worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, she said she “cradled” the injured woman–held her spine steady and “chinned her”–lifted her chin so that the patient would be able to breathe.
According to Chris Emmons, Public Information Officer for Humboldt Bay Fire, the initial report came in for an accident with an extrication.
Hulbert said that crews from Humboldt Bay Fire, City Ambulance, Eureka Police and traffic volunteers responded to the area.
The first units on scene saw that there was minimal extrication needed, but, due to the distance from the roadway, the full response was continued.
The woman was carried to the ambulance and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
The volunteers are currently still directing traffic in the area as Hodgson is close from N to Q Street.
“They are doing an investigation,” Hulbert explained.

A some job everybody, and nice.job bystander!!!the people here are amazing.glad the women is ok thanks to the bystander and emergency folks.YOU ROCK
The woman died. She is not OK. Follow up Kim?
Other than she died, what kind of followup information are you hoping to learn? Once a driver becomes a patient, then privacy rules apply and it is difficult to get facts without family or friends reaching out.
Anyone can learn CPR or first responder skills – great things to know. You just might save a life someday, and how cool is that?
Toyota with an accelerator problem?
Feng Shui
Thanks God that Erin Edmondson was there !!!!
gods love that woman.
Great work Mr. Flynn
Good thing she didn’t kill anyone. Remember, it may fall to you to take access to a vehicle away from a loved one due to age or medical issues.
Most people would like to die peacefully in their sleep, not screaming like the rest of the people in the car.
The life you save could be their own.
You better have the community invest in better public transport options than currently exist before you hit that age or have an early stroke. Know- it- alls resist giving up driving harder than anyone.
I so totally agree with you Scott. My mother drove at the age of 88 until her final fender bender, two days after DMV reissued her license. Luckily my older sister was brave enough to take her keys. We had already reported her to the police and DMV. DMV says if the elderly can pass a written test then they are obligated to issue a license. It’s CRAZY I tell ya. There needs to be a way to measure reaction time and mental alertness. (Remind me of this when I’m 80+)
Kudos to all the help! Scott..Most people would rather die in their sleep? Not Vikings Laddy,Fully awake, eyes wide open, and looking forwards/towards the ship/ trip to Vallhalla.
Thanks all the same, but I’ll take the sleep route many years from now, if this is an enrollment window. Good luck with that boat ride to Orkin or Odin or whomever.
I doubt the Vikings wish to be taken out by a car with excessive speed. I don’t see the honor in being a speed bump!
