Man Convicted of DUI and Resisting Arrest
Press release from the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office:
Today a Humboldt County jury found 43-year-old Destry Beargrease Girard guilty of felony Resisting an Officer and four misdemeanors: Driving Under the Influence—3rd offense, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving on a Suspended License—2nd offense, and Resisting/Delaying/Obstructing Officers.
The charges stemmed from a California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigation that began on March 4, 2015 when a security guard for the Sun Valley bulb farm in Arcata called in a possible traffic accident at the south gate of the property. When CHP Officers and Arcata Fire Department personnel arrived, they found the defendant lying underneath a Harley Davidson motorcycle, unconscious but not injured. Further investigation led CHP Officers to conclude that Mr. Girard drove the motorcycle to the location under the influence of alcohol. One of the CHP Officers was injured when the defendant resisted arrest. Arcata Police Department Officers assisted with the restraint of the defendant, who was then transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.
Deputy District Attorney Dave Christensen prosecuted the case with the assistance of District Attorney Investigator Marvin Kirkpatrick. Judge Marilyn Miles will sentence Mr. Girard on November 14, 2016. He faces a maximum sentence of 3 years for the felony charge; additional time and/or fines may be imposed for the misdemeanor charges.

“Beargrease” ??? Srsly?
He’s been pretty slippery.
Wrestler handle, I assume.
haha that’s what I thought too…as far as middle names go, it don’t get much harder then “Beargrease” lmao
Very sad. I knew him in the So Hum community where he grew up. I see no resemblance to the young man I knew. He was a bit of a hot head then and hence we ended up not friends.
His dad died suddenly when he was young. That didn’t help.
Who from his home community can reach out to him? Offer him some love and community?!!
Is his brother in a position to support him too?
Bear or beer?
Neighbor, my sister has 2 daughters with him. So I know a lot about the situation. He has been pretty far gone for awhile. To make matters worse he’s been in a motor cycle accident a few yrs back that gave him a terrible head injury, he’s been very different since then. Slower and doesn’t think straight combined with the alcohol and drugs, makes him very hard to help. His Mother has tried to help him, a few other people have even taken him in and it never worked out. His main problem is he really won’t admit he has any problems. He’s in a sort of a dillusion land. He Often sends his daughters letters from jail asking for money. It breaks my heart that my neices probably will never have a dad again. I hope someone can reach out to him, but it’s won’t be easy.
Thanks for that. Very very sad. Difficult when we know them young, see their potential, or, in your case, to know the damage to your/his loved ones.
Good reality check for me that he is difficult to help. It’s always hard for me to accept that people are that far gone or out-there that love won’t bring them back.
Will hold onto some hope. Yet will also now just send him blessings as he is now, without the need to ‘fix’ him.
I tried, but I was one that didn’t work out. Safety was a concern for me. He is a dear friend and hopefully he can get help. A brain injury and substance abuse are both treatable with the right kind of support.
Eel 707 you are spot on. We need people like you with a straight head. Hang in there for the kids/family.
I grew up with Destry………. He was a good person who did not always make the greatest choices, but his heart was true…….. This truly saddens my heart……… Brain injuries can definitely affect your decisions, and if they are exasperated by drugs,or alcohol then the outcome can be unforgiving……….. I have seen this with so many I grew up with. I hope He finds his way,and if he does I will be one of the first to hug him……………………………….
You too have a big heart Gemini!
Consider send Destry a message some time soon to let him know that you are thinking of him. Little bits of support could make all the difference.
Awe thank you…… yes you are right for sure……
We love the person ,but not the disease…………. Unfortunately I have lost so many I grew up who I loved and cared about. We have a poor system in general in this country treating mental illness/ drug addiction, and the combo does really go hand-n-hand. Yes it is their choice to get help, but in times like this compassion can help a little……………
Thank you, Gemini.
Thank you for your kind words. RHBB is one of the places we can go for encouragement. I have hope that Destry may choose life rather than a road to death. Since visiting him over the last few months, being drug/alcohol free is helping him to think more clearly. Time will tell if he continues to make the right choices and prayer will help to bring me peace. As you may have realized, I have been effected by this tragedy, as has all our families…tragedy after tragedy, family after family. May I share two takeaways: every choice I make matters! and also making sweet, lasting memories with family that can be held onto in rough times is crucial.
We need more people with your level of love & compassion in this world.
My love and thoughts are with you and your family. Hoping something greater comes of all the pain your family has suffered through this.. Much love and respect…
This guy was arrested a few months ago for throwing a bicycle threw a window and stabbing a man. Why was he even out of jail? His victim is claiming money from the victim witness fund in humboldt.
