Press release from the District Attorney’s Office:

Today District Attorney Maggie Fleming announced that on Friday, September 30, 2016, a jury found 42-year-old Sean Blackmon guilty of two counts of kidnapping to commit robbery, two counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a firearm, one count of burglary, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The jury also found true the special allegation that he personally used a firearm.

On Monday, October 3, 2016, the jury also found true the special allegations that Mr. Blackmon had previously been convicted of criminal threats which is a serious or violent felony under California’s three strikes law and that he had previously spent time in prison in the last five years.

The charges resulted from an incident on August 14, 2015 on Buhne Street in Eureka. The two victims came home from lunch and found Mr. Blackmon burglarizing their home. Using a shotgun belonging to one of the victims, Mr. Blackmon directed both men around the house and in through the back door. He proceeded to separate them and tie them up in different rooms using rope and a phone charging cable. While they were tied up, Mr. Blackmon continued to rummage through the house.

The victims were able to free themselves and escape unharmed. As they fled the residence, they flagged down a driver on Buhne Street, who called the police. The police responded just as Mr. Blackmon was stealing a car belonging to the victims. He then led the police on a high-speed chase through Eureka which ended when he crashed into a brick wall near the intersection of Everding and S streets, and was detained by the Eureka Police a few minutes later. The defendant has been in custody since that time. The victims and defendant were not previously acquainted; no evidence indicated the crime was drug-related.

Deputy District Attorney Roger C. Rees prosecuted the case with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Gary Cooper. Kaleb Cockrum of the Humboldt Office of Conflict Counsel represented the defendant. Judge Cissna presided over the two week-long jury trial. In addition to the two victims and the driver who called 911, Eureka Police Department officers Ryan McElroy, Bryon Franco, Tim Jones, and John Gordon testified at trial.

The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the witnesses for testifying, and the jurors for their attention and hard work in listening to the testimony and deliberating to reach a verdict.

The scheduled sentencing date is November 10, 2016 at 4:00 in the afternoon. Mr. Blackmon faces a maximum possible sentence of life in prison, with a minimum time to parole in excess of 50 years.

He never hurt or tried to hurt the people he was robbing, He might be screaming out for help just like the demoniac in the gospel of Luke where he called himself
” Legion ” because they were many demons living inside him. This man needs help, throwing the book at him will not work. Lets solidify around this confused man and give him a sentence of not less than 5 years and no more than 7 years. Let us show Grace in a time like this and not stern judgement as one day we may need a break.

Being led around at gun point then tied up with a piece of cable is definitely hurting someone. No, no point in wasting resources on this guy.

Pointing a shotgun and tying people up isn’t trying to hurt someone? You are as bad as him….

He may be crazy but he knew exactly what he was doing when he used a shot gun and tied the guys up; continued to look for plunder. I see any remorse in his smirk…

No comments on the fact he is wearing an apron? Was he trimming or cooking? If you get busted and you are smiling the way he is, it should be punishment times 2.

That looks like the a stab proof/ bullet resistant apron they put on people for court appearances, due to them being disruptive or having threats against them. Probably not the thing he was wearing at first..

@tugboat,
are you frickin serious? they tried to give me 5yrs for just having mmj over my scrip limit and owning a rifle and a pistol legally. i never brandished them, they were unloaded in a gunsafe. i don’t see how your idea of compassion is even relevant. he brandished a stolen firearm, kidnapped, and stole,gta,high speed chase… period…and you suggest getting his possessed mind help? have you seen the help they are currently giving the mentally sick from eureka to garberville? they are not helping them at all. the only place this man will get the benefit of access to help is in the system. he made choices as did I. I paid my debt to society, and so will he…

Some people take there homes very seriously to protect like the women in Latonville Mrs. 357 up side your head if you come into her house and she shot the intruder and got away with it because she was in the right lane in life so please keep one in the chamber Home Land Security is always active it’s red alert now in the whole emerald triangle . And make sure you alway lock your fire arm up its the law.
