Football Wraps up Pre-season with Loss to Kelseyville

South Fork High School’s varsity football team fell to the Kelseyville Knights last Friday night in Kelseyville 46-7. The Knights poured on the offense in the first half, scoring six touchdowns. South Fork managed one touchdown in the final period and made the extra point.

“Kelseyville is a big team, and a good team”, said head coach Andy Olsen after the game. “They played clean and put their subs in during the second half,” he added, pleased with Kelseyville’s sportsmanship.

Despite the lop-sided score, Olsen was pleased with the efforts of several players. Senior Ipo Savoie was named player of the game for his efforts on both sides of the ball. He rushed for 19 yards on 6 carries and scored South Fork’s only touchdown, and had a 15 yard kick return. On defense he had 4 solo tackles and was in on 7 more to lead the team with 11.

Junior lineman Brad Kloiber forced a fumble and freshman running back Austin Worrell ran the ball 4 times for 9 yards, and took over kicking duties when regular kicker junior Scott Coffelt was sidelined briefly with an injury.

Sophomores Dusty Rodas and Dylan Music get stronger every game according to Coach Olsen, and each had a solo tackle and two assists against the Knights.

The Cubs’ 4th quarter scoring drive started on a spectacular one-handed catch by Coffelt who had been shifted to wide receiver after a minor injury. Sophomore quarterback CJ Van Meter threw a 40 yard pass with Coffelt as the target. The throw was a bit short and Coffelt had to reach back between two defenders to grab the ball with one hand, and then hang on for the catch as he fell to the ground. Three runs, one by junior running back Gabe Malley, one by Worrell, and one a keeper by Van Meter, brought the ball to the 1.5 yardline. Savoie finished the drive, taking the ball into the endzone on the last play.

Next up for South Fork is a trip to Ferndale Saturday with a 2 p.m. kick-off. “The tough part of the schedule is over,” said Olsen, looking forward to playing schools with rosters comparable to his own as Humboldt del Norte Little Four Conference play opens.

“We have a chance to score against Ferndale, but we will have our hands full defensively,” Olsen added, referring to Ferndale’s strong running game and quarterback Nathan Hansen.

These young guys will play hard and demonstrate sportsmanship. It would be nice to see a large crowd behind them the way ferndale supports their program when fetndale plays at south fork

I agree with Thebigdeal, these kids need more support from their families and peers. I know it’s just about harvest time but find a couple hrs a week for your kids to go out and root for them. I really hate to see St Bernard’s playing in the same league, honestly St Bernard’s should not have been allowed to play at all this year after being caught being the CHEATERS THAT THEY ARE!! And now their leader (Tomlin) is adding the title of Head Baseball Coach to his resume’. The man who “didn’t know they were recruiting” is the AD, Head Football Coach, Varsity Girls Basketball Coach and now Varsity Baseball coach. Shoot he may as well fire any other coach they have and take over those too. Although he may have a fight on his hands if he tries for the Varsity boys Basketball coaching position. I don’t think Thrap would take that laying down. That whole recruiting issue has put a stigma on that school. Nobody (unless you are a part of the Holier than thou clan) sees that school the same anymore. They are TARNISHED and all at their own hands!!!

Yeah ! not a big enough crowd to hurl insults at the visiting team and still feel safe about it.
