Press release from County of Humboldt:

The County of Humboldt is seeking input from the community on improvements to current waterless toilet regulations. A discussion forum has been scheduled for Friday, Sept. 30, at the Healy Senior Resource Center in Redway.

The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services, Division of Environmental Health (DEH) staff will be present to answer questions about existing regulations. Staff is also interested in hearing from those with experience or interest in using, building or studying the use of waterless toilets which include composting toilets, incinerating toilets and pit privies.

The goal of the public forum is to assess the current regulations, their effectiveness, and evaluate the need for improvements to current code and regulations to suit current waterless toilet technologies in the best interest of public health.

DEH staff is encouraging community members to read the existing codes relative to these types of toilets and to attend the discussion forum. Codes that apply to composting and incinerating toilets are found in Chapter 5, and those that apply to pit privies are found in Chapter 3 at this link:www.humboldtgov.org/DocumentCenter/View/1261.

Comments and literature references may be submitted anytime by sending an email to [email protected]. Please place “Waterless Toilet” in the subject line.

The meeting will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The Healy Senior Center is located at 465 Briceland Road in Redway.

A discussion forum will be held later this fall in the northern area of the county.

Nothing wrong with compostng toilets. Not all that much different than an outhouse. I used one alongside the road in Arizona and it was quite nice.

My compost privy has been in continuous use for 43 years. I hope to get up there to this discussion, and I hope you-all will come, too. af

Back in 1978 or 79, United Stand (Mendocino) secured a $250,000 grant from the EPA for a “pilot” program to discover, monitor and analyze the efficacy of waterless toilets, specifically composting privies.
The program was sabotaged by (first) the Mendocino Environmental Department of Health, under Dave Long. Then the CA State Members of the Sanitarians’ professional union got ahold of it, and we had to abandon the study before it got so designed to fail that it would have been a black mark forever in the annals of sane sanitation. (And we turned back the funding.)
Despite “all the professional” information out there, Counties do not seek it out because the sanitarians’ training only relates to flush toilets and leach fields. And others folks are so frightened by their own excrament that they cannot rationally address its use and/or disposal. Out of sight, out of mind.
Humboldt’s invitation to learn from those of us who have never seen the sense in pooping in our water supply is a welcome sign, and should be honored. This is a major move in the right direction. Let’s KEEP it moving. Hope to meet you there, af
