Press release from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

With the assistance of California Wildlife Officers Foundation, California Waterfowl Association, The Humane Society of the United States, The Sportfishing Alliance, The Nature Conservancy and private donors, a reward of up to $10,000 is offered for information that leads to the capture, arrest, and conviction of Shawn Eugene Hof, Jr.

On Sunday, August 21, 2016 at around 12:40 a.m., a wildlife officer from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) was patrolling for poachers in Carlotta, Humboldt County. The wildlife officer saw a pickup truck with occupants using spotlights in an attempt to poach deer on Redwood House Road near HWY. 36. The wildlife officer attempted to conduct an enforcement stop on the vehicle when a person who was in the rear of the vehicle began shooting at the wildlife officer. A vehicle pursuit ensued with the suspects crashing the vehicle off the road. The suspects fled on foot into the woods, evading arrest.

Just curious… As a completely HYPOTHETICAL (like in “Not Really”) question. If I locate this guy, turn him in, and the prosecutor screws up and they have to turn him loose. Do I still get the reward?

It clearly states…. “the capture, arrest, and conviction of Shawn Eugene Hof, Jr.” Which leads me to wonder why anyone would turn him in, because he is innocent until proven guilty.

By the way, I do take the charge of shooting at a game warden very seriously. I have at least three Game warden and ex game warden friends and one family member.

Sure, innocent until proven guilty. If your information results in a conviction, then you get a reward. AFTER a conviction. No conviction, no reward. That’s my assumption, anyway. Plus, you have the satisfaction of having done the right thing. OK, don’t laugh. It happens.

Ernie, Good question and I don’t have the answer. HYPOTHETICALLY, I would turn him in and stipulate that the reward, if any, I wish to donate to a charity of my choice. But that’s just me and in no way reflects what others might do.

I believe the reward is doled out in proportion to the effectiveness of the information you provide.
For example: you say what you saw him do, what he told you about it, and where he is now, and they convict him based on your info, you get $10,000.
If you just know where LEO’s can find him, you probably get a much smaller sum.
It says in the release: “…a reward of up to $10,000…”.

Good point Gunther. Do you know that if you donated $10,000.00 to the The Rotary Club to cure Polio, Bill and Melinda Gates would donate another $20,000.00 dollars for a total of $30,000.00. Rotary has been trying to cure Polio since 1985. They thought that they would have it cured by 1990. Several strains of polio have been cured with only one strain left, and just a handful of children left in the world to have it. It’s religion that stops Rotary from a complete cure. As more babies are born the cycle starts over.

The good point is that 100% of the donated money goes to cure Polio, Rotary has it’s own administration budget. Over 15 billion has been spent on the cure so far. I had several friends and classmates die from polio and one grievously affected, so I take Polio personally.

So, if anybody can catch this guy…. I made my pitch.
And…. My apologies for going off topic.

To clarify, one can donate any amount to Rotary and the Gates Foundation will match it two-to-one. Feel free to donate how ever much you can

Excellent job, Ernie and the Rotary! Good for you. Thank you. I, too, remember growing up with the scourge of polio hanging over us all summer, wondering who would “win” the ghastly lottery and be paralyzed by Christmas. By the time I got to High School, Drs. Salk and Sabin had saved humanity from that scourge.

Except for the low-information, regressives at home and certain religious fanatics here and abroad who refuse vaccinations and provide a reservoir of disease, threatening us all. Please everybody, get your kids vaccinated. If you surf the Web all the time, cruise on over to the medical sites and see what polio, dyptheria, pertussis, etc. DOES to a child.

No thanks to his mother and father. Zero guidance. His dads obit says “he loved snagging salmon out of the van duzen more than anything”. Yeah, as a family along with cousins and neighbors, they would go out and snag salmon out of the Duzen. They would pull every last salmon out of the Bridgeville hole and do it day after day. I called and reported them, but never got a call back from the CFW officer. I left several messages on his cell. No telling how many salmon they poached over the years. This guy has killed over 100 deer in his short 23 years on the earth. He has killed velvets, does, spikes, buttons, big buck and fawns. I would search the homes of his associates and you would probably find many CFW violations.
