26-Year-Old Laytonville Woman Was Medevacked From Hwy 36 Accident Last Night

chp major injury featureLast night about 8:30 p.m. a Laytonville woman, Akaysha Rae Lynn Harward (age 26), was seriously injured in a solo vehicle accident. (We reported the incident as the woman was being medevacked from the site.) Today, the California Highway Patrol released more information about the incident:

CHP Officers received and responded to a call of a solo vehicle injury collision with emergency personnel also responding. The collision occurred on SR-36 east of Bramlet Road. CHP Dispatch advised of a solo female victim lying in the roadway, breathing but not responsive.

Upon CHP arrival, the 1995 Dodge Van was located on the north shoulder of SR-36, on all four wheels, with major rollover collision damage. The victim was secured to a backboard being loaded into a Cal Fire engine by fire personnel.

The victim’s status was critical [Head/neck trauma from ejection, possible broken back] and no statement could be obtained to assist in determining the cause of this collision. Cal Fire engine transported the victim to Bramlet Road where she was flown by PHI to Mercy Hospital in Redding. After inspection of the vehicle’s occupant restraint system, it was determined the victim was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of collision and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

The cause of this collision is still under investigation.

Despite the benefits of seat belts being well documented, some people still refuse to wear them…

Who travels over 36 without wearing seatbelts?

[edit]She’s my friend and I know for a fact she didn’t use her phone while she drove [edit]! How dare you make assumptions about a person’s death whilst knowing hardly anything about the situation. The family is still waiting for more details [edit].

Folks simply need to SLOW DOWN on 36. Having lived on 36 since 1988, I have noticed that speed related accidents are the norm. A rollover incident such as this is entirely speed related. And if you are driving too fast, you will hit those redwood trees when they jump out in front of you. Not to mention the frequent deer and occasional elk. And no seat belt? In 2016? I hope she survives her own stupidity and I am thankful nobody else was hurt. There are more vehicles using this road too. A lot more because of our new commercial industry.

I have been here since Halloween of 1985!!! I used to drive this road from MM19.5 to the Junction of 36 & 101 every day I think I know the road well but the only time I exceed the posted speed limit is in the straight stretches!!! I freely admit to being totally stark staring Batsh!t Crazy but I have NO deathwish to drive erratically on this road!!! SLOW DOWN live longer!!!

I feel your pain. I too think that this is a travesty of justice. The sad part is what most likely happened is, “whoever” was driving at the time the girls were killed lawyered up and their lawyer advised them to keep their mouths shut.

Unless someone can be a witness and positively identify the person behind the wheel they can’t be charged. I’m pretty sure that all of us who are speculating, and seem to “know” who did it, can’t say for sure who did it.

I also feel sorry for law enforcement. They are people, and parents also, right along with the rest of us. You can only imagine how the cops must feel, not being able to arrest the driver, but unless they have a witness they would only be wasting there time arresting anyone. They could even be sued for false arrest.

I’m sure that the cops are doing all they can to solve this murder mystery. Give them a break. Try a little understanding, there is a lot that they just can’t say in public.

The good part is whoever did this awful disgusting low life thing to these two young ladies, will have that in their mind until the day that they die.

Hey Cousin, they need to make sure all the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed. I think the need are still checking the videos from local bars to see how much she had to DRINK. Just my opinion

Ya troy I agree, I think people should contact the DA office if they want to know what’s going on.
Often life is like tv, hasn’t almost everyone seen a law and order episode where the DA explains why they need certain info to prosecute a case and/or to get a judge to issue a search warrant?
Getting a lawyer so fast, and one who got another resident out of a similar situation recently, sends the clear message that the authorities better have every little thing in order so they don’t end up with a mis-trial. Or another 6 month sentence for killing someone with your vehicle.

It can take weeks, even a few months to get physical evidence processed by the state labs. They want charges to stick. So it’s a waiting game. If they arrest without all evidence in hand, they’ll have to let her go and re-arrest later. Since she is refusing to come in and simply confess, as is her right, it’s a waiting game.

Kym,
You are doing a great community service but please remember to include the “Who, What, Where, When” that you learned in journalism school.

In the example at hand, could probably could not disclose the “Who” but you should have been able to narrow down the “Where” to something a little better the “Hwy 36”. Near what? Which milepost?

Here is something to think about when driving on SR-36 in Trinity County.
It may take a while for Fire and EMS to reach the scene.
This accident was reported to TCSO at 2033 hrs, Post Mountain VFD and Hayfork VFD where paged at 2039, Cal Fire was also called.PMVFD EMT was on scene POV at 2051 hrs and requested Copter, TCLS 303 was on a call in Coffee Creek, so TCLS 301 from Weaverville had to respond with a long ETA.Cal Fire Eng2476 was on scene at 2103 and Cal Fire Eng 2494 and Hayfork Eng 3111 where on scene at 2108, PHI Med 43 was on the ground at 2127..Med 43 lifted off for Redding at 2212Hrs..so it was about 2 1/2 hours after accident that she got to the ER.
PLEASE drive careful and wear your seat belt..

It seems lately no matter where I go in Humboldt, people are just driving hella crazy fast. Slow down and enjoy the beautiful place where you live… No appointment is worth kissing a redwood tree at 60-70 mph 🙁

For those of you who are blaming drinking or speeding or texting are sick human beings. How do you know her car didn’t malfunction?! She is going to die almost a year after her twin sister. She was one of the kindest & sweetest humans alive. Maybe spend more time being kind/compassionate instead of saying such hurtful discusting insensitive things. God forbid something were to happen to your own family members. I would never wish the pain and heartache myself and the rest of our family is feeling right now. Find something more positive and loving to do with your time.

Akaysha was declared in brain death on 7/28. Arien her twin was pronounced on 7/28 of 2015. Their father passed from cancer Aug 2014. Their families struggle thru and power on… whatever the causes are irrelevant and change nothing. We all hope that people stop, reflect, learn, grieve, remember and not dwell, and continue forward. This will honor them and be what they would want and expect.

The only thing that matters is a lovely woman human being died, it doesn’t matter how or anything else, she is gone, have some sensitivity to her family and friends like me, who are mourning her loss. She was a wonderful kind giving soul and will be missed by all that new and loved her, all of the whys, reasons, etc. won’t bring her back and at this point don’t really matter. What matters is the world lost a lovely young woman today who had a whole life ahead….God let her rest in peace……..eternal love and peace to Akaysha……

Akaysha and Arien were twin sisters, now they are reunited again together in Heaven. May they Rest In Heavenly Peace.
It is true that they passed away in close date of one year apart.
But what is untrue is that their father Matt Harward is deceased. He is not DECEASED. He is very much alive, and is a Art teacher at Huntington Bch High School. He was my Sons Art teacher, and friends with the twins. Whomever is stated mistruths about his passing is sadly mistaken. What needs to be done is prayers for Matt, and his Wife, Kiersty, and the remaining siblings. My heart and prayers for comfort go out to them. Please do the same.
