15 to 20 Good Samaritans Help Put Out Roadside Fire Today

Roadside fire

Hot car exhaust system caught roadside grass on fire [Photo by Rusty Rogers]

A man driving to Eureka from Sacramento had a bad day today. He had car trouble. When he pulled over north of Weott, the heat from his exhaust system caught the roadside grass on fire. Multiple passerbys pulled over to help put out the fire. One of them, Rusty Rogers, took this photo. He said 15 to 20 people helped put out the blaze including Cal Fire.

One lane was temporarily closed early this evening until a tow truck arrived to remove the vehicle.

It’s a good idea to drop $25 on an A-B-C Fire Extinguisher and keep it in one’s vehicle…Smart! af

Fire extinguishers are classified by fire type. The A, B, C rating system defines the kinds of burning materials each fire extinguisher is designed to fight. The number in front of the A, B, or C indicates the rating size of fire the unit can extinguish.

A Fire extinguisher wont work on a Wildland fire unless you get there when its wastebasket size. If you have a tool like a rake, shovel, or a fire tool, you’re better off removing the fuels from the fire by scraping a quick fireline down to clear dirt. Doesn’t need to be real wide on a small fire, that’ll buy you some time until help arrives. Don’t get in front of the fire, and watch your clothes, especially loose cotton type items…If in any doubt, let the Fire people put it out and just keep everyone safe.

I’d love to see a photo of the good Samaritans putting out the fire. That would be a happy pic.
