Warning: Keep Back…New Shelter Cove Signs Advise Beachgoers the Bluffs May Collapse
Two new signs in Shelter Cove remind beachgoers that the bluffs are unstable. Three large landslides temporarily closed the popular destination in May.
Recently, Shelter Cove Fire warned that, “concussing effect of the larger explosives used in the coming holiday, as well as the vehicles using the beach, and the attending activities therein, may well destabilize further the current, precarious situation.”
Today, Shelter Cove Fire is further advising people coming for the traditional Fourth of July festivities “not to park up close to the bluffs.” Cheryl Antony, their spokesperson warns that if the bluffs calve again, vehicles and people could be buried. The department asks people coming to enjoy the holiday to “keep eyes and ears open…Or watch the fireworks from the Lighthouse. ”
Antony said that Shelter Cove Fire will have backup in case of problems. “We have been told that we will have Sheriffs Office units out here and Cal Fire,” she explained. ” And of course our firefighters are all on duty. Our goal is to keep everyone safe. And we want them all to have fun and be respectful of others.”

Wait? They actually put a new sign up at the cove? Guarantee it will have bullet holes in it by the end of the week. Lmao
I’d like to see the bluff “calve”. Yes I know it’s a typo, but I found it funny.
I did actually mean “calve.” One of its definitions is “to break up or splinter so as to produce a detached piece” or to “set loose.” It is used for icebergs, glaciers and (rarely) landslides.
It’s a TKO in favor of the Kempster.
Thank you Kym. We’ve spent time on the beach there for years and have never seen calving like there’s been this year.
It’s scary to think of the number of people that could be injured in one incident,
Let’s just pray that no one is injured in the future.
Like in fragment..
August 1957.
What a sad story.
I applaud the Fire Department for issuing a warning about the clear and present danger of slides on this beach. Not to do so, with resulting injuries or death(s), would be considered negligence, after the fact. The 4th of July brings hundreds of people to the Cove every year. The high tide will 8.46 feet at about 11:00 pm and will be incoming from about 4:45 pm with an increase of over six feet, corresponding with the peak time for throngs of people and dozens of vehicles on the beach. In essence there will be little if any beach left. A rough ocean and large swells will exacerbate the tide. Even the King Tide in January only reached 8.44 feet. Better safe than sorry.
Yes we need warnings for things that cause one death every 60 years
Too bad the dog owners didn’t have a dog warning sign up for their pitbull.
Such a tragic ending to a young life.
10 or so years ago there were 2 young children playing in the sand dunes in Samoa. They dug a hole into the dune and it collapsed on them, killing them. I think of that often as my grands love playing and digging in the sand when we visit the beaches.
Mary Ann Machi: Great research. Thanks!
Thank you
Every cliff on the Pacific Coast is falling down. Why is this one so special. Time to close the planet before someone gets hurt.
This one is composed of softer, crumbling rock and gradual ocean rise eats away at more shoreline, everywhere. Southern Florida may be underwater in a few decades. This one is special to us because it is nearby. People in Pacific Palisades think their bluff is special because their houses fall off into the ocean as the bluff erodes. So it goes.
Most cliffs don’t have hundreds of people gathering under it making an insane amount if noise while it is actively changing. Der….
Fall Mountain, Fall…. Just Don’t Fall On Me. Jimi
Forget the cliffs they need a sign warning of the drunken idiots down there seven days a week. Large concussive explosions have been going on for a week now with no “calving”. Oh yeah how about some signs warning of the giant pot holes on Shelter Cove Rd. There are sometimes deer in the road too maybe a sign would help.
Its a dangerous business going out your front door.Stay home . Get fat die of a stroke. slowly. safely and all alone , all is lonliness . Melt into your couch. And dont forget to wear your football helmet in case a meteorite strikes at night.
Isn’t that car on the left parked under the cliffs that are sliding?seems risky.those cliffs have been slowly falling apart like the rest,we just don’t see it happening.
They have been falling an eroding for years more scare tactics to keep people away .Fear mongering nothing more .I guess they need signs all along the coast up to black sands to warn of the dangers , Nothing ever changes is shelter cove .People move in from out of the aera and want signs allover just like where they moved from .
One more thing is this a Geologists opinion or some non professional opinion from the volunteer fire dept
It’s probably the general managers propaganda. He recently put out a notice a few months ago saying although we had a good winter we should conserve water as if 50 inches of rain wasn’t enough for the 400 full time residents of the cove . The guy is a complete joke .
It just happened recently, often when a cave in occurs it could be followed soon by another.Im sure the locals are aware that it could happen and don’t need the sign, but with the fourth coming and lots of people from out of the area likely to be there, why on earth wouldn’t you want to make them aware, your cynical comments would seem very self centered if a group of people were crushed that had no idea there had been a recent slide.knowledge is power
Knowleddge might be power, but there will always, always, ALWAYS be more stupid than smart people.
I’m far from being an alarmist, but I think the signs are appropriate. It they help inform one unaware person of the danger, it’s worth it.
ALLIGATORS and SNAKES in the water. Not every person is aware the cliffs may give. They WILL give without warning. Respect for the ocean’s natural beauty and power is needed. ..yet often forgotten.
Danger: Gravity and entropy.
And if the sign wasn’t there some Jack ass would sue if they got hurt!!more than yokels use that area
Watch for sliding otter’s Wunder if they know Chief Falling Rock?
