Missing Mendocino Man Found Alive
Robert Hayden, the missing Laytonville man has been located alive.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page posted the above photo at 1:50 p.m. Accompanying them were the words, “Robert Hayden has been found alive and is enroute to Ukiah Valley Medical Center! Thanks to all that kept him in your thoughts and prayers.”
Hayden has been missing since 6:30 Tuesday night. Searchers today have been scouring the hills surrounding his home. A large number of search and rescue personnel gathered near Bell Springs Road to look for the 82-year-old man.

Nice to see a good outcome!
Great he’s found ok!!!
No disrespect but why such a huge response this time? There have been so many missing folks and haven’t seen this kind of response to any of them. Because it’s not a potential pot person it gets more agencies?
Again not trying to be disrespectful just wondering whaz up and why there’s a command center with flag and large antenna.
I don’t think this has anything to do with it not being a pot person, it has everything to do with it being an elderly person who will not have the opportunity to survive the outdoors like a younger person!
I agree, this seems to have been a high risk individual who needed help and a smaller team of searchers may not have had a successful outcome considering the terrain and area.
I am a member of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team. While I was not able to respond to this search I, along with many other volunteers from neighboring counties, have frequently responded to Mutual Aid requests from Mendocino county. The response has nothing to do with the characteristics of the missing person, only the availability of resources. Searches can only be launched when there is some reasonable notion of where to start. That, unfortunately, is not the case with many missing persons.
The antenna is there so that field teams can communicate. The channels used can be picked up on any scanner so there is nothing secretive here.
The perception of the size of the response is often a function of media coverage.
Another reason for the wider response is having enough resources preventing not having to rescue lost rescuers in steep brushy terrain.
thanks for your efforts, all of you searchers, especially you volunteers.
I wondered the same “just curious”. Seems to be that they knew where he got lost, and since he is elderly, they had to move quickly. My first thought was he must be special to someone in law enforcement or search and rescue. Wish all missing persons could get this kind of response. But if they dont know where they actually are missing from, it would be a waste of resources. Like searching for a needle in a haystack. So happy this gentlemen was found alive. Brought tears to my eyes. Blessings to all the search and rescue, and I hope the gentlemen gets to go home soon.
And another thing, they knew he was there in a certain area. He wasn’t able to go very far at all. So it wasn’t a needle in a haystack, he was very, very close to where he disappeared from. I think having friends in LE or it not being pot related is a wrong assumption.
Happy ending.
The story doesn’t say who found him. I’m assuming that it was the search crews. I don’t have nor do I desire Facebook so I didn’t check the SO page.
He has dementia and needed all that help! Thank God he was found.
Sweet,good news is awsome!!
soooo, no one yet asking about spraying him with helicopter juices then?
glad he is found
I think that if you look closer the “helicopter Juices” are a grassy opening on the far hillside. But…. I like your story better.
indeed…hahaha, oh geez louise, I have had enuff internets today then, thanks ernie…
Thanks to all the people who put in the effort! So thankful he was found alive!
