An incident Saturday nearly had tragic consequences. Three men were rescued from drowning in the same area where, in April, the Trinity River swept away three. One died as a result. (See earlier story here.)

Below is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office about the latest incident:

On Saturday, June 11, 2016 at about 2 p.m., Humboldt County Deputy Sheriff’s responded to the Tish Tang Campground for a report of a subject stuck on a rock in the middle of the river. The Hoopa Valley Tribal Police boat and medical personnel arrived on scene to assist. Three male subjects were across the river from the deputies clinging to rocks. The Hoopa Police boat, operated by Hoopa Tribal Officers, successfully rescued all three subjects. One of the subjects was taken to the local hospital for treatment. The other two subjects did not require medical treatment. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public of the dangers of swimming in rivers in Humboldt County. River currents can change quickly, sometimes daily, or even by the minute. This combined with unknown and quickly changing depths of the river can be deadly. Very hot and humid days combined with low water temperatures in late spring and early fall can lead to quick cramps. Every year, Humboldt County experiences a tragic death due to swimming in the rivers and falling victim to a strong current.

That is a mystery that only the idiots that go for that swim can tell you about. People are naive and stupid. It amazes me that we don’t see double the fatalities than we do.

We have a dangerous section of the “feed” into Lake Mendocino down here. The County posted signs which were stolen, so neighbors painted a HUGE sign which the County deemed inappropriate. Consequently, that stretch continues to be a place of Natural Selection to this day. So be it. af

You can’t fix stupid….. Unfortunately stupud tends to fix itself. I went to a friend’s place in Salyer, you can hear the trinity rage from a half mile away. I have no clue why people hear that and think, “hell, I’m a good swimmer, gimme a few beers and I got this!”

I witnessed 3 young children, all under the age of 8 playing on the rivers edge. Mom’s were sunbathing and none of the kids had on life jackets……. The youngest appeared to be 3 or 4 years old.

It is easy to sit and write things about how stupid people are. They are very fortunate to be alive. Hoopa tribal police and fire department are the reason those kids arw still here. As it says Humboldt county sheriff’s stand and do circles. They are stupid. I am the mother of the gentleman that drowned in April. And all of your cold comments are hurtful. People do things amd they pay the ultimate price. To sit there and assume and judge. That is what is wrong with thos society!
