I was out in Salyer over the weekend. After a day at the pool I was packing out my daughters life jackets, and this beautiful thing decided to make a pit stop!

Beautiful Mardis Gras colors. I believe that is a buddleia bush , aptly nicknamed butterfly bush, that it has lighted upon.

I love to look at the butterfly pics. And the Moths also. Humboldt has great big moths, I dont know what they are called but they are big and red. Thanks

Lots of Tiger Swallowtails being seen all over Eureka area right now.

We also saw our very first Anise Swallowtail ever in Humboldt, cutting down the dang nab Anise, an Anise Swallowtail caterpillar crawled out.

We found him a nice stand to inhabit. Such beautiful caterpillars and relatively easy to raise, a good project and a whole bunch of lessons for kids too.

I just noticed a Monarch here in my yard, along with many swallowtails. Am I wrong in thinking the Monarchs haven’t been around in the last few years, or am I just more observant these days? Sorry I don’t have any pictures.

Here’s a photo of a butterfly with wet wings that my Robot rescued from a sink on The Wood Ranch about a week ago 🙂
