[UPDATE: PARK CLOSED!] Possible Hazmat Incident at Accident on Sprowel Creek Road
Cal Fire and a Hazmat specialist are heading to an accident in which a truck hit a pole and knocked a transformer down in the 900 block of Sprowel Creek Road. The California Highway Patrol Incident page reports that they are concerned about “polyclorinated phenol.”
Although phone and power are both carried on the pole, there are no reports of outages. However, the California Highway Patrol Incident page does mention that Frontier has been notified and we received a single report from a reader that Frontier internet was down south of Ferndale. These may be related. We’ll try to determine that.
UPDATE 5 p.m.: A spokesperson for Southern Humboldt Community Park tells us, “The Community Park is closed today and possibly tomorrow. A truck hauling a trailer with mowing equipment hit a power pole. The transformer on the pole exploded and the pole fell on the truck. {There] are downed power lines, extreme fire danger and potential hazardous material spill from the transformer.PG&E, CALFIRE currently at the site. Hazmat team on the way.”

Frontier Internet is down in Petrolia, as of about 1pm
Down in ferndale also
That’s bad stuff, stay away from there, where the heck was it going? A truck load? Wtf
The transformer was possibly the source of the PCBs.
It’s pesticide, so take your pick of the hundreds of places it could’ve been going, but eventually it would all be in the river.
Your Really off base making up stories again
Some trolls don’t read the article. Just read the headline and go.
PCB are not used as pesticides, its a man mad oil that is tolerant to extreme heat and acid, it is used in transformers as a coolant to keep them from over heating.
The oil in transformer is full of pcb s
FYI……Poly-chlorinated Bi-phenol’s were used in early transformers because they could withstand high temperatures thus avoiding fires. Transformers made from approx. 1975 on, are completely PCB free. The odds of a transformer having PCB’s today is minuscule never the less they still are all treated as if they contain PCB’s until a simple test has been taken to see what the oil is made up of. The oil used today is very well refined mineral oil. If you look at the oil inside of a transformer today you can see the bottom of the transformer through the oil because it is so clear.
Frontier is still down in ferndale
Since yesterday? Good lord.
