On Friday, May 27, at 12:15 p.m., Humboldt County Deputy Sheriffs responded to a parcel on Lake Prairie Rd in Weitchpec for a pre-arranged civil standby due to the property owners having been confronted by armed men during their previous trip to the parcel five months ago. At the request of the property owners, deputies searched the residence which belonged to the property owners, and located two male suspects. The suspects were identified as 20 year old Marco Antonio Arellano, and 21 year old Edgar Tizoc Ponce Hernandez, both citizens of Mexico.

A further search of the residence revealed approximately 5 – 8 lbs of processed marijuana, piles of marijuana trim, three loaded rifles, and ammunition. Deputies searched the rest of the parcel and located a greenhouse with approximately 236 growing marijuana plants, ranging from 3” – 12” in height. Deputies determined Arellano and Hernandez were responsible for the illegal marijuana grow operation on the property.

Arellano and Hernandez were arrested for cultivation of marijuana, conspiracy to commit a crime, and for arming themselves during the commission of a felony. They were taken to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where they were booked on the above charges. Each had their bail set at $50,000.

Anyone with information for the Sheriff’s Office regarding this case or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at 707-445- 7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at 707-268-2539.

Illegal squatters and confronted the owners armed is what the article said… So obviously no one let them stay there…. People need to read correctly and fully before asking questions…

Charlie, I think the story is saying that the owners went to their parcel 5 months ago and these men were there. They didn’t want them there so they requested the sheriff’s go with this time. Perhaps these growers were squatting, or there was arrangement gone wrong. I don’t know why they waited 5 months to deal with it, but I don’t think the owners gave them permission to grow there.

This happened to a friend of mine . He was mentally differently-abled . He thought he had no way to deal with it and was ready to sell his property. This process took him months to figure out because he was drinking and depressed . Thus months can go by without action being taken simply due to excess mental stress on a persons system that just can’t handle it . That is just one way in which a person could go 5 months without dealing with squatters .
I would bet that they waited the 5 months to ensure they were growing so the cops had a reason to remove them legally .

Do you mean Mexicans? Looks like the cops “did their Job” since they were locked up. They have no control over bail. They are as tired of arresting the same people over and over only to be turned loose by the justice system as the rest of us are.

It takes a while to evict people from your property whether legally there or not. Could take up to 6 months if the proper paperwork is filed and no one misses the court dates. This timeline is pretty typical.

Without knowing the property owners I won’t guess why it took 5 months to handle the situtation. However with the mind set of society in todays world, I will offer a possible explaination. These are property owners living out of the area with an investiment in property in an isolated ruraul area. You come across someone that is armed and doing something illegal with no law enforcement near by, you compromise and hope that they move on so your property is left intact. Much what our business community does to protect their businesses against the transient population in the towns. Just as society tells us we have to accept “homelessness”, the “green rush” is forced upon us as being something we need to live with. Besides just as with the criminal behavior of the transient population, the criminal behavior of the green rush population is ignored by the local Sheriff’s Office with excuses of no personnel available, or send us a letter (we won’t investigate or do anything other than a half assed job of documentation). Maybe they were hoping the propblem would go away with last year’s harvest season.

Maybe you need to talk to your local leaders to have the number of law enforcement officers increased if you are having a problem with enforcement due to lack of personnel. This becomes a problem in many communities because people don’t want their taxes to increase. They want law enforcement protection, but don’t want to pay for it.

Or maybe the owner hopes to cash in on the wave of recent land sales, but the buyer demanded an unoccupied parcel.

I’m surprised the deputies were brave enough to go up that road.

Nobody is invading America and squatting to grow tomato plants.
Wouldn’t making it legal prevent this type of thing?
Maybe that answer is too simple….

What about deportation or ICE? Not to sound like a Neanderthal here but shouldn’t they be arrested for an illegal visit or revocation of ther tourist visa. (Written with a bit of sarcasm).

From all the debates and town hall speeches I’ve listened to, including Hilary’s and Bernie’s, Trump seems to be the only one who gives a shit about the USA. The rest of them seems to think that America is an evil country that needs to be handed over to the rest of the world and dissolved. I think the property owners are racist for calling the cops in the first place, I mean come on these poor people were obviously just trying to work hard and better their life. And the property owners were probably white privileged racists anyway, how much land do they need? If Bernie was president, he would be able to take their land and give it to the bums to build a beautiful community farm, were they could all stop using drugs and learn about the pride one feels after a hard days work earning a living for one self. Wait I guess if Bernie was president he would just confiscate and publicize the property then give all the bums and illegal alien immigrants Free housing, heath care, food, entertainment etc. And I could just pay higher taxes. And I would deserve it too, because somewhere way back in my Irish/italian family line some one probably knew someone who had slaves.
