[UPDATE 7:03 p.m.] Roads Close in Arcata as Man Clings to Outside of 7th Street Bridge
“Units running breaks to slow traffic down,” says an officer on the scene referring to traffic on Hwy 101. Officers are closing down traffic on the 7th Street overpass
Mental health caseworkers on their way, reports the dispatcher.

UPDATE 6:21 p.m.: What appears to be a woman social worker speaks to the man and hands him a cigarette.
UPDATE 6:28 p.m.: The Department of Mental Health worker is the man’s housing worker. A mental health specialist has been requested.
UPDATE 6:33 p.m.: Officers look on as a knot of people attempt to talk the man into coming off the bridge. Meanwhile, a mental health worker is reportedly about 10 minutes away according to scanner traffic.UPDATE 6:40 p.m.: “We’re loosing some ground now he moved back towards the freeway,” reports the incident commander to dispatch.
UPDATE 6:43 p.m.:
UPDATE 6:45 p.m.: The man climbed the fencing on the bridge. “He intends to run,” said the Incident Commander. The man jumped onto the deck of the overpass but he was caught almost immediately.
“We’ve got the subject detained,” the commander says over the scanner.

UPDATE 6:55 p.m.: Here’s a gif of the officers leaping the caution tape and racing after the man.

Why haven’t they stopped/detoured traffic on 101?!
Who asks a man that is clinging to the edge of an overpass with both hands, risking a lethal fall, if he wants a damned cigarette? Why not just ask him if he wants one for the other hand too and be done with it.
Thank be to God! He’s safe, down and “Detained” by police, for trying to runan making a breefor it! Amen
