[UPDATE 10:45 p.m. Subject Detained!] Reverse 911 Asking Neighbors to Shelter in Place as Suicidal Subject Refuses to Surrender Firearm
Neighbors in the Sunshine Way area of Spruce Point area are being asked to shelter in place by a reverse 911 call after elderly, suicidal man refuses to surrender a firearm.
A negotiator and a mental health expert have been requested by law enforcement. The California Highway Patrol, the Eureka Police, the Humboldt Bay Fire Department, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office have created a perimeter around the home the man is in. A SWAT unit is on its way.
“All the other occupants of the house that we know of have been evacuated,” reports a law enforcement officer over the scanner. The elderly male is currently on the porch, he adds.
A few minutes later, “We’re still in negotiations. He still has the gun. We’re on the PA,” reports the officer from the scene at approximately 7:44 p.m.
UPDATE 9:43 p.m.: The SWAT team is telling the man in the home that they will be coming in. “They [the SWAT team] are all up there on the porch,” reports a witness.
UPDATE 9:45 p.m.: The witness says that a police officer’s scanner said,”Subject detained” and officers are starting to leave the incident.
UPDATE 10:45 p.m.: We have not been able to confirm this with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, however, according to scanner traffic, an individual was sent to the hospital with a gunshot wound. On the way to the hospital the individual needed to receive CPR.
