Kim Bergel of the Eureka City Council was at the Palco Marsh as campers, law enforcement, government agencies and non-profits prepare for tomorrow’s deadline. At 8 a.m. Monday, the city says it will begin enforcing the anti-camping ordinance on the remaining estimated 100 or so people still living there. If the campers refuse to leave, they could be arrested and their belongings confiscated.  Bergel says that there are groups ready to help the campers. In the video interview below she says that Betty Chin’s organization should be able to help about 40 of those that will be displaced. She names other possible groups that she says will be assisting with the relocation effort.

Although media will be allowed in the Palco Marsh tomorrow, others, unless authorized, are being warned to stay away. According to the City of Eureka,

Beginning on May 2nd through at least May 6th 2016, the waterfront greenbelt areas between Truesdale and West Del Norte Streets west of Broadway will be completely closed to all pedestrian bicycle, or vehicle traffic. This closure is due to the planned police enforcement and property maintenance operation being conducted during that period.

Unauthorized person(s) entering this police operational area will be subject to arrest upon entry. Any illegal campers still remaining in the Palco Marsh area will be subject to arrest. All entrances to the area will be monitored and entry restricted. All remaining illegal campers in the marsh are urged to seek services or temporary housing from one of the many service options A special fair will be held at the foot of West Del Norte Street on May 2, 2016 from 8 am until 5 pm.

I’ve got a 65 VW bus I can donate to the relocation efforts.
I’m happy to shuttle people over to the nearest public park or river bar.

Tall ships photo makes me think of Columbus on his way to meet the Natives in the New World. (nice pic.)

I remember those tall ships from a visit to Boston in the 80s. They’re magnificent.
