Woman Sexually Assaulted When Her Car Broke Down Near Hopland, Says CHP

A woman was allegedly sexually assaulted when her vehicle broke down near Hopland yesterday. The CHP has released the following information on the incident. [With this incident, the mom and her daughter being protected by a CHP officer south of Rio Dell seems particularly heartwarming. See that story here.]

This is a press release from the California Highway Patrol. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

GetImageOn 03/7/16, CHP Dispatch received a call of a an assault victim on US 101 south of Hopland. It was reported that the victim had been assaulted in the dirt turnout south of Hopland. Officer Simas was dispatched to the scene of the incident and while en route was advised that the victim had moved to McNabb Ranch Road. Upon Officer Simas arrival, the victim clarified that she had been sexually assaulted, and gave a vehicle description and description of the suspect.

CHP Dispatch broadcast a “Be On The Lookout” for the suspect vehicle. Sonoma County Sheriffs Office located and detained the suspect on US 101 near Geyserville. Ukiah CHP personnel responded to Sonoma County and transported the suspect [Alex Joseph Greene of Kelseyville] and suspect vehicle back to Mendocino County. Mendocino County District Attorney investigators responded and assisted Ukiah CHP with the investigation. The suspect was arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail.

The California Highway Patrol would like to remind all motorists of some important tips to stay safe in the event your vehicle becomes disabled. 1) Stay inside your vehicle and keep your doors locked. 2) Don’t accept help from strangers. 3) Use your cellular phone to call for roadside assistance. 4) Use your cellular phone to call the Highway Patrol if you feel you are not safe.

Another piece of advice… carry a large mag lite flashlight in your car with extra bulbs and batteries. Not only bright enough to blind someone for a minute, its a great tool to thwap someone on the head and potential to knock them out. That’s what the cops used when I was a teen, saw one hard thunk knock someone out.

Be careful ladies!!! A look at local happenings lately shows how we’re on our own for the most part.
A stalker in so hum with ten restraining orders he constantly breaks and is still walking the streets. Was half hoping this was done by him so he would go to jail& learn what sexual harassment is from the opposite side.

So sorry to the woman this happened to, already scary alone on side of road. Please look into help for yourself, there may still be a fund that exists in cop coffers that pays for therapy for the victim for a year.

AND that is why I carry a pistol when I travel. Just insurance. I have always said that if my car broke down (I travel to the Bay Area a lot) I would call for help. I would stay in the car. If a stranger came to help I WOULD NOT open the door but would ask them to go get help . If there was no cell service I would sit until a CHP drove by. IF the stranger they had ill intent they would be met with the ONLY MEANS I would have to protect myself ( and my daughter who travels with me). Not saying I would shoot to kill but I would surely disable their knees… and this would be ONLY if they we physically trying to break into my car or had a weapon themselves. THAT is why I carry a pistol when I travel.

Just the peace of mind it gives you is priceless, especially when the kids are with me. The pistol wont do do any good at gome in the gun cabinet, for sure!

Raquel, regarding, “Not saying I would shoot to kill but I would surely disable their knees…” please take some time to educate yourself on this matter. Better yet, get some training!

Police are trained to aim for center mass or the head, and so should you, if you believe that you or someone else is in imminent danger of serious bodily harm or death. Cops don’t try to shoot someone in the knee. Why, you might ask? Because if you shoot at a limb, you are more likely to miss, for one thing. Numerous case studies over the years of incidents where such restraint was attempted resulted, unnecessarily, in the death of the officer(s).

I applaud you for carrying a pistol. Hopefully you have a concealed carry permit, and you have taken the time to train. If you are not proficient with the weapon, you may find it being used against you.

Kinda rude for you to say, in the portion you wrote, that she was “allegedly” assaulted. Criminals get to say “alleged”, victims deserve more respect

Exactly right, Kym. Charges have NOT been proven, so alleged it is. Incidences of false accusations do occur. I say this with all respect and sympathy for the alleged victim. We’ll see.

There was a particularly heinous “allegation” of a sex crime out of Willits a few weeks ago. Turns out, the only thing “heinous” about the ALLEGED perp was his haircut, as his speedy release from custody seemed to later prove. False victims gladly hide behind the mantle of protection granted to actual crime victims, especially the part where you get “immunity from criticism…”

All that chp advise would leave us fully dependent to the system that is a bit broken and not functioning,..
what a joke!
How about carrying a nice 38 special that fits in any woman’s purse.
What happened to defending your self in worst case scenario.
We are all supposed to sit like some defenseless duck until the cops arrive.
Get real!

A nice can of foaming wasp spray works well. Shoots 20 feet the gooey foam sticks and burns when in the eyes. Great stuff, cheap ez to get. I keep a can in car, another one by front door and there you go. No permit required!

I’ve used that spray for years to eliminate wasps nests, but never have thought of it as a weapon of defense. Thanks for the great tip!

Anyone recommending wasp spray in place of pepper spray for personal defense is giving bad advice, however well-intended. 40,000 law enforcement agencies across the United States use pepper spray. None use wasp spray. Postal carriers use pepper spray, none use wasp spray.

People using wasp spray would do well to consider that federal law prohibits the use of any pesticide “in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.” Likewise, some states forbid carrying substances for self-protection that aren’t specifically authorized for that purpose. There could be significant liability issues involved. Can you say jail time, or lawsuit?

There are also obvious practicality issues involving the size of the can of wasp spray versus the easy-to-carry pepper spray.

Please check out “Wasp Spray versus Pepper Spray” ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgC5TQWIF2k ) and “Pepper Spray vs. Wasp Spray Challenge: Get the Facts for Self-Defense” ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Uy9MnQfk_0 ) for some demos and facts to hopefully set you straight. Wasp spray has very little effect on people. Pepper spray will incapacitate them.

A concealed weapon would have been better. Let’s start turning the table on the low life’s that think that they can assault women.

I agree lee.L That’s what I do. I’ve never had to use it but it saved my life one time.

I was gold panning on the Trinity River by Big Bar and two guys walked up to me and started talking to me. The first thing they said was if that was my truck parked up by the highway? It was. They asked me if I had any money? I told them no. A couple minutes goes by and they ask, are you sure you don’t have any money? That’s when I got scared. I stood up and told them all I have is my pistol and I pulled it out of my pocket and showed it to them. I didn’t point it at them either. We stared at each other for about a minute and they decided they had business elsewhere and walked on down the river without saying another word. I’m convinced they would have left me on the river bar and stole my truck, at the very least.

I’ve been in a similar situation and I will never forget it. I did draw my weapon because there was four of them and one of me, Not to mention it was private property I was protecting that I caught someone vandalizing. Property is my brothers. My hands are shaking right this second just thinking about it.

This is not the good think to carry a pistol when anyone travel. I think when I travel & if my car broke down I would definitely call for help. I will think to stay in the car for safety. If anyone come to help I don’t open the door but will ask them to go get help. I always should have the knowledge to protect myself. but eventually I would like to say this with all respect and sympathy for the alleged victim.
