[UPDATE 10:09 p.m.] Road Overview for Travelers
This is for all the folks traveling in or out of the area.
Hwy 299 is closed due to an active slide near Big Bar. Caltrans spokesperson Betsy Totten reports that the road “is not going to be open today.” There is also one way controlled traffic just east of Burnt Ranch. UPDATE 10:08 p.m.: Caltrans posted the below photo on their Facebook page around 9:30 p.m. and wrote, ” Our crews will be reassessing the slide activity at daybreak but at this time, there is no Estimated time of re-opening the highway due to the danger of the slide.”
Hwy 101, our north to south main artery, is open but has only one way controlled traffic near mile marker 21 in Del Norte County south of Crescent City. (See story here.)
Hwy 96 has one way controlled traffic near Happy Camp. Expect 20 minute delays.
Hwy 3 is closed south of Callahan.
Hwy 36 is open to one way controlled traffic due to a down power pole. (See story here.) UPDATE 5:25: the Highway is now open.

The crew working on the slide near Happy Camp told me they are on site from early morning to six each evening. The wait time is between five to twenty minutes. They said there is one lane opened for after six but it is up to the drive to be cautious going through the slide area. Thank you road crew!
