Dear Members of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, Upgrades Coming! Sincerely, AT&T

After last week service outages, AT&T says they got a plan to do better.

Here’s their letter to the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors:

att_vert_color_smlDear Members of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors,

As you know, the North Coast has experienced a number of recent communications outages resulting from fiber cuts.

AT&T understands how difficult it can be to lose voice and data communications, even for a short time. The company has been exploring options and we have positive news to share. AT&T is upgrading the North Coast network to significantly increase the network’s protection against outages or service disruptions caused by fiber damage. AT&T has already begun engineering these upgrades, and we estimate they will be complete by the end of 2016. Once completed, the majority of the fiber miles in this area will be protected from single points of failure. This improvement will help protect phone and internet services for consumers and businesses in the North Coast from outages.

To better serve our customers in the North Coast region, AT&T will upgrade the wire centers on the main route of the network in the area by installing new equipment in the central offices and programming that equipment to route traffic over diverse fiber paths. This means that if fiber is cut on one side of the wire center, the equipment will be able to switch and reroute through another path, thereby making the network more resilient and reducing the risk of outages in Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, and Sonoma Counties.

These upgrades are part of our ongoing effort to make phased upgrades to our network as technology continues to evolve. We remain committed to optimizing the AT&T network in the North Coast with new technologies and increased capacity as they become available.

Thank you for your advocacy on behalf of the communities you serve. I look forward to working together as we build a stronger, more resilient North Coast network in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Marc Blakeman Vice President, External Affairs AT&T California

last year my phone went out dec. 6
internet worked but no telephone
they missed repair date of dec 12 , then said im sorry , your repair slipped thru the cracks . it was finally fixed on dec. 23 when i was out of town for christmas .
it went out again in august and a friend , a repairman said that some in clearlake were out of service from early dec. till mid to late january
THEY DONT CARE , they make money from cell phones and data
they have always lost money on the land line part .
im retired AT&T lineman , worked 25 years for them and dad started with them in 48 and land lines always been a loss for them

The AT&T answer is a dodge to confuse people. The heart of the issue is using fiber that heads east of Eureka giving a second path our data can use to get to the internet. That is known as “dual-homing”. Netlink101 has been doing so for years.

What AT&T is suggesting is they will use redundant fiber paths in the current right of way (up 101 basically). Trouble is, for nearly all the run from Ukiah north, there is NO redundant path!

This announcement is simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic to allow AT&T to avoid the cost of paying for the second link.

Perhaps pressuring AT&T about adding the second link via social media and canceling service will encourage AT&T to act better.

We hold the purse strings.

Pressure Estelle & other supervisors. It is their JOB to make this happen. They got high speed cable to Hoopa & Bridgeville, they can force AT&T to serve us all. They are weak & lazy and all psyched up by cannabis rules that will never fly.

Screw AT&T!!!! & US Cellular for using ATT lines! How did verizon have no problems? I want the supes to contract with another company. We have all been paying a tax on our cel bills for a backup system thats supposed to work in these cases. It failed, twice now in 4 months.
AT&T does not care about their customers at all, they are too big of a company now. Call and complain, it can make a difference sometimes.

How about we ask AT&T to stop blocking municipal broadband attempts. How about we force AT&T to also install conduit for municipal broadband when running new lines. Its a joke that we have to BEG a single provider to upgrade. Diversity of providers\paths is the key.

I live in the middle of the woods with no power or cell yet have att fiber lines only 3 miles away but no fracking way will att let me on that fiber no mater how much i pay.

The forest service could help here but since it is low on funds attempting to lease any mountain tops (45sq feet) from them for links costs and arm of and leg and double that in permits and insurance.

I asked Estelle about this. I am in a similar situation but the f o line is literally only a stone’s throw away. She had no clue and made up some bogus response.

I like how they throw that, “even for a short time” bullshit in there. Just to let us know we’re being babies.

SUPRVISORS: why do we not have high speed internet along the 101 corridor? The fiber optic cable runs through Myers Flat (with a switch box) and I bet the same is true for Weott. It is your RESPONSIBILITY to see that your constituents can participate in the 21st century. Are we less valuable than Bridgeville or Hoopa.
