‘Help Find Masala,’ Asks Zoo Officials Searching For Missing Red Panda
According to Gretchen Ziegler the zoo manager, “We got a report from somebody who possibly spotted it outside the park around two this afternoon. We confirmed immediately that it was not in the exhibit.” At this point, they don’t know how she escaped. But, said Ziegler ruefully, “She must have found someway.”
Ziegler says that Masala is not in any danger from the weather. “Perfect climate for her but she has never been out of the exhibit,” Ziegler said.
Zoo officials are hoping the public can assist them in finding Masala. “The reason we wanted to issue a press release is that we will be relying on the community to help spot her,” Ziegler said. “If someone does spot her, we will be out there immediately to help recover her safely.”
She wants to reassure the community that the animal is not a danger to humans but requests that no one approach it. Instead, please contact Please call 707-499-3668 or Eureka Police Dispatch at 707-441-4044 if you see her.

You guys are a World Wide Web site – if you really want help finding MASALA… please add you’re AREA CODE. Telephone area code, please. THANKS!
Fixed it but—I just have to ask—How is someone going to find Masala without being in Eureka…?
Maybe FYI will ship in some red panda experts. This is how they do it,
They will first jump out of a plane parachute down, using special panda gadgets they will be guided directly to the panda and!
SMASH! Smushed the panda. Shoot.
Jk I love pandas, that would be horrible. It would be pretty cool if they had special panda gadgets to locate them tho.
Okay on a serious note, why not have a tracker on the more endangered protected animals. Guess it’s Humboldt haha
It’s bear season and I still have a tag.
Pandas aren’t bears…and these lil ones look more like red raccoons…I’m gonna check Craigslist for someone trying to sell a “Fox raccoon” or something stupid like that when they figure out they don’t know how to care for it…
Thank you, Kym!
There is no guarantee that Masala is [still] in Eureka. I’m not sure anyone knows for certain where Masala is at the moment.
But, more importantly, people who are in Eureka or the Eureka area could simply be visiting. What if they read this and then spot something? More info is more!
I like this site and thank you for posting, Kym!
Let’s hope she’s found today.
Yes! I hope so. Thanks so much for posting this, Kym. 😉
Bummer! I hope that little creature can make it back to it’s home safely. Does the zoo have suggestions for people to try and help this guy be found?
What was suggested to me last night is that the public be alert and ready to call the above number as soon as possible. The sooner they get the information on where the panda is, the sooner they can get to the spot and hopefully, get her back home.
Dude we might have some cross bread red panda raccoons in Humboldt!
Just one more thing that sets us apart from other places in the U.S.
Totally separate species. They can’t cross breed.
I hope they find her soon! She doesn’t know about roads and all the other things she will encounter out there! I hope she survives.
My gut feeling is this animal was stolen by some liberal wall street occupy, green peace type, They probably saw it as a act of liberation from the zoo. Of course after a few weeks the newness will wear off and they will try to sell it. To another liberal type, cause they are the only enlighten ones able to care for a homeless panda.

The Pandas of Humboldt, I saw him with Jerry Brown. They were at Trader Vics drinking a Pina Colada. His hair was fabulous. WaaHoo Pandas of Humboldt
What about Keet and the three radio stations putting out alerts? Red pandas are nocturnal in addition to being out at dawn and dusk. Maybe the folks who live nearby that grow bamboo could check their gardens carefully. Though red pandas also eat flowers and some tree bark.
