About 3:15 p.m. Eureka Police received a call that a man with a machete was in the student parking lot near the Eureka Adult School.

“A teacher called it in and said he saw him walking with it,” stated Brittany Powell, EPD spokesperson. Officers requested that everyone at the Eureka Adult School stay inside while they investigated, said Powell.

Eureka High School locked down, also.

The man was not being aggressive with the weapon. “When officers arrived on scene, he was in a vehicle,” said Powell. ‘He didn’t make any threats but didn’t offer any reason why he had it in his possession on a school campus,” she said.

Wayne Graham, age 57, of Eureka was taken into custody at 3:33 p.m. He is being charged with possession of a weapon on campus.

I think parents might be worried about their kids if it’s near their school. Understandable.

I’d be much worse worried if my kid, who’d have to be FOURTEEN or older to have been in the vicinity of this fellow with the machete, didn’t have the sense to stay away from him when he was surrounded by a bunch of cops. There was NO need to “lock down” the schools for ANYONE’S safety.

So either you’re saying it’s better to put up with a police state than a wrinkle of worry ever cross some imagined parent’s brow, or you’re not thinking this through. If we were talking about kids under eight or so, then, yeah, better to scare the kids with a lockdown than a man with a machete being dealt with by the cops… otherwise… not.

Schools. Pre-school through university and on into even “adult school”… ought more precisely be called Infantilization Centers. Pathetic. Seriously pathetic. We’re being trained.

Yep home of the brave. I’m surprised the students didn’t walk out of class to protest the mans rasist micro aggressions.
Its a good thing he wasn’t a little girl with a bubble gun http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/01/kindergartner-suspended-over-bubble-gun-threat/

Or eating a poptart then he would have been in big trouble

Idunno why people feel the need to comment about how unnecessary the cops were. It’s a school. Safety is important.

Yes you guys may be laughing at the degree in which this matter was handled but think about what would have happened if if went the other way and the “man with the machete” went crazy and started slaughtering everyone he could get too and the schools DIDNT take actions to protect their students! It’d be a HUGE liability for the schools if they couldn’t prove they had done something to try and prevent it. Better be safe than sorry! I’m guessing you guys do t have kids of your own.

Lockdowns are called by EPD not by school personnel. It was their decision to lock down the sites.
