[UPDATE 11/10] Hwy 101 Briefly Closed as Patient Extracted From Crashed Vehicle

scannerAccording to scanner traffic, a vehicle headed southbound on Hwy 101 crashed into the center divide near the Hwy 36 offramp at approximately 8:36 p.m.  Hwy 101 is being “briefly” shut down as the occupant is being extricated through the driver’s side door. Southbound traffic is being diverted off at Hwy 36.

The occupant is described as having major injuries.

Please avoid the area for now.

UPDATE 8:55 p.m.: Southbound traffic is now being allowed to pass on the shoulder.

UPDATE 9:07 p.m.: A second vehicle is also involved a traffic accident a few miles to the south of this.

UPDATE 9:46 p.m.: One victim transported to trauma unit out of the area. Officers at the scene expect the lanes to open back up by 10 p.m.

UPDATE 10:01 p.m.: According to scanner traffic, the vehicle has been removed and the scene swept. All lanes are now open.

UPDATE 11/10: Press release from the California Highway Patrol:

On November 09, 2015, at approximately 2037 hours, CHP officers responded to a traffic collision on US-101 southbound, south of SR-36.  A 2002 Buick LaSabre, driven by, Elbert Coulter, age 87, of Lucerne, CA, for reasons still to be determined, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it sideswiped a 2010, Kia Soul, driven by, Brittney Fisher, age 19, of Fortuna, CA.   The Buick continued northbound in the southbound lanes and collided with a concrete wall in the center divider.  As a result of this collision, Coulter sustained major injuries and was transported by ambulance to Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna for injuries he sustained from this collision.  Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in this collision.

Was right behind this on the freeway, looked really bad. hard to believe anyone made it out alive! Prayers to those involved! Be careful out there on the road guys!

That’s the bottom line as far as safe driving is concerned. You can’t drive faster than your ability to react or you are DONE. Hope the injured is alright.
