Hear those sirens screaming in Eureka about 8:15 this evening? Firefighters arrived at the five-story Silvercrest apartment complex only to find a bit of smoke. Sometimes, like tonight, a possible fire turns out to be nothing more than burned food. Thanks, firefighters for hustling just as hard for smoke as for flames.

Lids placed over burning pans work best. Dry extinguishers make an awful mess when discharged indoors. Flour works better.

Kitchen tip:

Microwaved water makes the best weed killer.
