Press release from the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office:
On September 24, 2015 at approximately 7:15pm David Hoie returned to his hunting camp. A Deputy responded to the camp to confirm that Mr. Hoie was there and to see if he needed medical attention. Mr. Hoie declined medical attention and seemed in good spirits. The Deputy interviewed Mr. Hoie who stated that he hiked into a canyon on September 23, 2015 and was unable to hike out until the morning of September 24, 2015, he ran into some other hunters on the 24th who then gave him a ride back to his camp. He stated that he had noticed both the fixed wing aircraft and helicopter about five miles west of his location. Mr. Hoie thought that the plane was there scouting the fire that was still burning in the area.

Nobody better for the job. 😉
At least he came out alive.
Never underestimate an older gentlemen. It called, “Old man fortitude”. They may not win the race, but they have more chance of finishing. After such a long life of hardships, struggle and disappointment, many things become a much smaller challenge.
That sounds sorta poetic, but I would hazard a guess that he got his OMF from leading a life of hard work and a love of the land. Hardships, struggle and disappointment aren’t really conducive to producing a tough, healthy old critter like Dave.
He must be a very competent backwoodsman. Setting up camp is part of the fun.
