UPDATE 12:02 p.m.: Press release from the California Highway Patrol:

On the morning of Saturday, September 19th, a 2000 Honda Probe Prelude was traveling northbound on US 101, north of Jacobs Avenue, where it collided into pedestrian who was walking in the middle of the fast lane of northbound US 101.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., 23 year old male, Joshua Jacobs of McKinleyville was driving a 2000 Honda Probe Prelude northbound on US 101, north of Jacobs Avenue.  A pedestrian, 45 year old male, David Liebe of McKinleyville was wearing dark clothing and walking northbound in the middle of the northbound fast lane with his back to oncoming traffic.  The Honda’s headlights illuminated the pedestrian and Jacob turned the Honda to the left in an attempt to avoid colliding with the pedestrian.  Jacobs’ attempt was unsuccessful and the right front of the Honda struck the pedestrian.  Liebe sustained a major injury and was transported to St. Joseph Hospital for medical treatment.  The driver was properly restrained and DUI is not a factor in this collision.

The California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area is investigating this traffic collision.

UPDATE 2 p.m.: The California Highway Patrol reports, “The pedestrian, David Liebe was air lifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for further medical assistance.”

I have lived, driven, hitch hiked, or sat on buses all over this country. And I have only seen here, in Humboldt, that pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed on freeways. Go figure.

If the guy lives, he should go to jail. EVEN if his purpose was suicide, certain modes of suicide are NOT okay under ANY circumstances.
