Structure Fire on Henderson Avenue Yesterday Afternoon

At 12:14 PM on 9-15-15, Humboldt Bay Fire Engines 8113, 8112, 8115, Truck 8181, Battalions 8105, 8104, 8102 and Chief 8101 responded to a reported structure fire at 1136 Henderson. B8105 arrived on scene and reported light smoke showing from the eaves of a single story house. The occupants had returned home to finds smoke coming from the eaves and were standing on the sidewalk. There was no smoke or fire visible inside the residence. Firefighters searched the roof and interior of the house to locate the source of the smoke, which was narrowed to a hot spot in the living room. A faulty electrical junction box and wiring had malfunctioned and heated the structural members and redwood sawdust insulation to the point of ignition. Units opened the ceiling and removed all signs of burned material from the residence. The fire was confined to the living room area, causing approximately $20,000 worth of damage.
Humboldt Bay Fire reminds all residents to ensure they have working smoke detectors in the living and sleeping areas of their houses. Also have working fire extinguishers, and know where they are located!
