No Foul Play Suspected in Death of Transient Woman Near Garberville

HCSOThe Humboldt County Coroner, Ernie Stewart, says that at approximately 5:30 p.m. yesterday, a woman was reported as being unresponsive in a transient camp near Alderpoint Road and the Bear Creek Bridge. When emergency personnel arrived on scene, the 45-year-old woman was determined to be deceased.

Though the woman is known to law enforcement, her identity is not being released until her next of kin is notified.

“There is no sign of foul play,” Stewart said. However, a blood sample was taken for toxicology reports. Stewart said at this point, his office does not know what is the cause of death.

When asked about how busy his office has been lately, Stewart said that there has been a recent upswing in drug and alcohol related deaths. Fentanyl, heroin, oxycodone and hydrocodone have been particularly prevalent.

“This county has a serious drug and alcohol problem,” Stewart explained. He described the problem as affecting individuals across a spectrum of ages. “Drugs are widely known and accepted in this area,” he pointed out.

““At least 100 people die from drug overdoses every day in the U.S. More than 36,000 people die from drug overdoses annually and most of these deaths are caused by prescription drugs (1).”
“Contrary to popular mythology, prescription drugs are more lethal than illegal or street drugs. Prescription drug abuse and addiction kill far more people in the U.S. every year than all illegal drugs combined.”
Quoted from psychology today, but other sources also reveal the same.
FDA approves oxycodone for 11 yr olds, but Pharma still lobby’s against pot.
Prescription drugs are more deadly than illegal drugs.

That’s because more people are on them. They are “legal” which makes them easier to obtain for the general population.

It’s not the drugs that are killing, just as it isn’t guns that kill people, it is the people that kill. People make choices that are not healthy. Legally prescribed drugs taken as directed are safer than when abused. No brainier. Lets be honest, Humboldt County embraces an “outlaw” mentality. Only a very small quantity of Marijuana grown in Humboldt County is “medical”. It’s grown because there is money that can be made and people want to get high. That is what the growing is about not medicine.

More people die from proscription drugs than all street drugs combined. If you combine that with medical mistake, infections and malpractice your looking at almost 300,000 a year. Far more then car accidents, terrorist and gun related deaths combined yet you never hear anything about it in the news.

Nobody has ever implied medicine is a perfect science and mistakes don’t happen. Unlike you some of us are not perfect and make mistakes and if it wasn’t for medicine many of Humboldt’s walking dead would not be around.

I’m sure you would not be saying such callous and heartless things if she were your loved one, Mogtx.
Regardless of your opinion of the “transient problem”, they are still human beings with friends and families who care about them. Every one of us has the potential to make mistakes, go through hard times and all that goes with it. Be thankful you have such a high horse from which to judge others. Just be careful that same horse doesn’t buck you off one day.
