Day 39: Lightning Fires–the Last Daily Summary

Cleanup continues to happen, crews head home, and the fires cool. The quenching of the last flames begins to seem possible. With the blazes dying down, the urgency of the updates has dropped off. We’re not deserting this subject completely but today is our last daily summary. However, we’ll still be following the fires and we’ll keep you up on what you need to know as it happens. Here is today’s summary which continues to look good:

  • Fork Complex (Trinty Pines and north to Hayfork): (Current as of 7:11 p.m. on August 30.) 36,499 acres burned and 97% contained. Structures Destroyed: Residences 8, other buildings 4, Firefighter injuries to date: 12, Total Personnel:269. “Fire behavior is expected to continue to be minimal as containment continues to be successful.” (More info here.)   • Gasquet Fire: (Current as of 6:34 a.m.)  28,614 acres burned and 46% containment. Total Personnel: 762. Activity increases as warming and drying continues.  Bear Fire – 10,666 acres, 46% containment.  Peak Fire – 11,366 acres 9% containment Feeder Fire – 898 acres 100% containment.Coon Fire 5,684 acres 100Containment (More info here.) Estimated containment date: Thursday October 15th, 2015 approx. 12:00 AM
  • Nickowitz Fire (northern Humboldt/southern Del Norte):(Current as of 12:10 p.m.) 6,881 acres and 75% contained. Total Personnel: 54. “Fire activity will be minimal until further drying occurs.”  (More info here) Phone: 530-627-3246. Estimated Containment Date:Tuesday September 15th.
  • River Complex:(Current as of 2:39 p.m.) 71,532 acres burned and 52% contained. Total Personnel: 256. “Warming & drying trend continues to take place.   • South Complex (north and west of Hyampom):(Current as of 7:46 p.m. September 529,395 acres burned and 89% containment. Personnel: 342. “Dry high pressure will dominate the weather for the entire week with thermal trough developing near the coast. Temperatures will gradually warm each day, climbing back to near normal for Monday through Wednesday and above normal for the second half of the week.” (More info here)

Yes, great job keeping facts up and rumors down. It’s hard to keep up with this many fires, and you had the best information around, and lots of folks depended on it. Thanks , again.

Here’s another kind word or two. Your coverage of the fires has been astoundingly good. Your site shows what an intelligent person can achieve in news coverage, and should be causing major dismay at places like the Times Standard which has vastly more resources and vastly less news than you. People such as you and Terri at KMUD are the future of journalism. Keep up the good work.
