[UPDATE 5:42 p.m.] Patient Being Airlifted from Scene of Major Injury Collision on 299

chpstarA major injury accident occurred on Highway 299 at mile marker 21.9 before 12 p.m. today.

According to California Highway Patrol spokesperson Cy May, a single vehicle went over the side of the road. May said one person was involved in the collision and the person is currently being airlifted from the scene. May said the vehicle involved is a maroon four door Nissan sedan. We’ll update this post if and when we have more information.

On 09-04-2015, at approximately 0300 hours, [Rafael] Morales was traveling eastbound on SR-299, west of Saber Tooth Road. For unknown reasons Morales lost control of his vehicle which exited the north roadway edge and collided with two trees. At approximately 1045 hours, CHP dispatch was advised by US Forest Service supervisors that Morales, a US Forest Service firefighter, was unaccounted for. CHP and US Forest Service began to search SR-299 for Morales’ vehicle. At approximately 1156 hours, US Forest service and witnesses located Morales unconscious in his vehicle, which was located approximately 30 feet down an embankment off of SR-299. Fire personal extricated Morales from his vehicle and he was flown to Mercy Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Alcohol is believed to have played a role in this collision which is still under investigation by Willow Creek CHP.
