Whizzing Through the Avenue: A Timelapse of Ancient Beauty
Haven’t yet had a chance to drive the Avenue of the Giants this summer? Time is whizzing by…and, in this short film, so are the redwood groves.
The film compresses the world famous drive down to just six minutes. This video by local resident David Wilson accompanied by music created by his son, Jerren Wilson, will remind you that exploring the world can start right here in our beautiful backyard.
Already been on the Avenue this year? Share your favorite spot with us please. Is it an albino redwood? A deep swimming hole? The Drive Through Tree? The massive logs at Founder’s Grove? The tall trees just off the Avenue in Rockefeller Forest? The Chimney Tree restaurant? The new wine tasting place in Miranda?

Wow, There sure are a lot of trees.
I say it all the time…
the bike riders have some balls to pedal through there with no shoulder.
Cool vid!
Very cool video! Where is an albino redwood, I have never seen one. Are they white like other albino things?
You can see a photo here (Scroll down) https://kymkemp.com/2008/04/21/top-ten-homegrown-humboldt-hits/ and …the untold story here https://kymkemp.com/2007/10/31/pale-parasite/
Sorry. Makes me seasick.
Hey David !
Great job on the video – I cant believe your kid is making music- !! I remember when he was born!
Good to see you too are still in the area and involved in placing Humboldts beauty on line for all to see!
Greg B.. fellow photog/Videographer from the “photoworld” days!
Thanks, Greg, and hi! Long time since Photoworld/Village Photo. Yes, my son was born around the time we were having to move the photo store from Arcata to Sunny Brae. Now he’s all big and going to HSU! Time. Strange stuff, indeed. Very fun to run into you here 🙂
Thanks for posting the video, Kym!
I’ve seen the albino redwood…
my favorite area is out the road to Honeydew. The “Big Tree” area. A lot of them are on the ground now but still amazing.
I think that stretch on the road to “Big Tree” area is especially striking. The lighting and the fact that the road is elevated gives a unique perspective of the forest floor.
This is one video that demands a “scratch & sniff” component…
I agree!
Excellent suggestion. I must include one next time.
This just in!
KymKemp.com Readers’ Attention Spans > Facebook surfers’ Attention Spans
I just looked at the analytics, and viewers coming from Kymkemp.com watched more of it than those coming from Facebook. Yeah, there could be any number of explanations, right? From a kitchen fire that cut a viewer’s enjoyment short to… a nice glass of wine that extended one’s enjoyment. But really, it’s not surprising, is it?
That’s interesting. I wonder what the reasoning is…
Maybe, those coming in from Facebook have so many other videos/info on their newsfeed competing for their attention compared to folks coming in from here?
In 2011, after the Hwy 101 landslide in SoHum, I made a similar video from my bus ride. I used music by Joanne Rand, Alice DiMicele and other eco-activists and added some Richardson Grove footage at the end. Didn’t speed up the footage, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-vhp0NypRs
