(Photos) 1/2 Acre Sizzles in ‘Suspicious’ Vegetation Fire
Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a vegetation fire on the 1600 block of Waterfront Drive next to Samoa Bridge in Eureka at around 8:30 p.m. today.
“It’s a suspicious fire just given the fact that there is no power out here,” Humboldt Bay Fire Battalion Chief Kent Hulbert said.
Hulbert estimated the burn to be about a half acre in size. He said about 10 fire personnel aided with the fire. Fire crews intentionally burned vegetation surrounding the initial suspicious fire.
“If you’re smoking or using fireworks, you need to be careful where your fireworks and smoking material land,” Hulbert said.
UPDATE 11:08 P.M.: Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:
At 8:32 PM on 7-05-15, Humboldt Bay Fire Engine 8115 and Truck 8181 with Battalion 8104 responded to a vegetation fire at the Foot of T Street near the Samoa bridge. B8104 arrived a found a 25 by 50 foot fire burning in tall grass and bushes next to Humboldt Bay. Bystanders were attempting unsuccessfully to put out the fire with their feet. No one was able to provide information as to the cause of the fire however one of the 911 callers stated they had heard a large explosion before the fire. Fire crews quickly surrounded the fire and halted the forward progress. Crews then controlled the edges of the fire and let the fire burn itself out. 10 firefighters responded, no injuries or property damage were reported.
After investigation the fire was determined to be human caused and suspicious in nature. The final size of the fire is ½ acre.
Humboldt Bay Fire reminds all residents that with the warmer temperatures and lower humidity, vegetation fires tend to get much hotter and larger. Persons smoking or setting off fireworks need to be extremely careful and realize that they can be held responsible for the damages. Additionally fireworks not displaying the California State Fire Marshal Seal are illegal and if found will be confiscated.
