On 06-14-2015, at approximately 10:15 a.m., a Sergeant with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was patrolling the river bar near Bear Canyon Bridge, Garberville. The Sheriff’s Office has received numerous complaints of illegal camping, garbage dumping, and other criminal behavior along local waterways.

While patrolling the river bar, the Sergeant contacted two subjects near a parked vehicle. The subjects were identified as Shaun Stringfellow (age 34) and Heidi Durtsche (age 46). The Sergeant recognized both Stringfellow and Durtsche from a previous arrest in Garberville dated 02-11-15. During this

incident, Stringfellow and Durtsche were placed under arrest for narcotic sales.

Today, it was discovered that Stringfellow and Durtsche had outstanding felony warrants for their arrest. Durtsche was taken into custody without incident. When the Sergeant attempted to place Stringfellow under arrest, Stringfellow fled on foot for a short distance. After a brief foot pursuit, Stringfellow was taken into custody without further incident.

A search of Stringfellow’s vehicle yielded approximately 5.4 grams of suspected heroin, approximately 2.0 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a digital scale, miscellaneous drug paraphernalia, a jar containing concentrated cannabis, and approximately 2 pounds of marijuana.

Stringfellow and Durtsche were transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for booking. Durtsche was booked for her outstanding warrants and her bail was set at $90,000. Stringfellow was booked on his outstanding warrants, along with fresh charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of sales, possession of concentrated cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, and violation of probation. Stringfellow’s bail was set at $125,000.

I don’t recognize these people as part of our community. Any chance we can get a restraining order on folks like these that state they’re not allowed to be within Redway or Garberville town limits?

Heidi has lived here in southern Humboldt since 1980, when did you move here? When people go wrong some fault lies with the society that failed to inspire them to do better. The mess just won’t stay under the rug now will it? More police are a poor substitute for teen guidance and an aware, socially conscious and caring citizenry. When you throw people away where do you expect them to end up?

Over and over, aren’t these scummy ones, getting tired of their way of life?
you know it’s to a point where these cops are so annoying while one tries to live out of his car while selling heroin, meth, weed, and whatever other drugs one can get a hold of. I suppose the meth makes it less tiring than the rest of us can imagine…..

Whether or not they’re tired of the lifestyle doesn’t matter if they don’t have any options or are too lazy to do otherwise. I mean, would you hire them? Want them for your neighbors? Overpopulation, lack of resources and lack of opportunities are some of the basic reasons why this segment of the population exists.

Heidi used to be a very different person and those of us that knew her then are heartbroken over what she’s become but we all tried, tried hard to drag her away from the edge and she just pushed us away. Knowing her childhood as well as I do, I understand why she would want to numb herself but I wish, with all my heart, she had grabbed on to one of the many hands that reached out to help….
