Coffee With a Cop

Press release provided by the Arcata Police Department.

ArcataOn May 16, 2015 officers from Arcata Police Department and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee.
All community members are invited to attend. The event begins at 11:00am on May 16 at the Arcata Farmer’s Market.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in Arcata neighborhoods.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know our officers.  These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships.  Similar events are being held across the county, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.

Typical APD putting on a good show and complete facade for the parents of HSU students. In the meantime, unsolved shootings and sexual assaults remain on the shelf…

Perhaps, if the APD’s attempts to build relationships with Arcata’s community members are reciprocated, some of these unsolved crimes may be finally put to bed, not to mention the possibility of a reduction in future such crimes. Kudos to APD for reaching out to Arcata’s stakeholders, all of whom I am sure, are truly working for the same goal as the APD – the elimination of crime and blight in our community. Now, who doesn’t want that?

Fuck that! Never trust a cop, ever! Bottom line!

You’re way off base. Are there bad cops? Sure. And there are bad librarians, bad sales clerks and bad teachers. But the vast majority of people in whatever profession you chose, are doing a good job. So don’t let a bad experience with a cop poison your future encounters with cops who may cross your path. Allow that to happen and you will end up being the big loser.

Personally, I think it’s a GREAT idea and they need to do it at least weekly for the rest of time.
